In August, Duelists around the world will officially be able to get their hands onYu-Gi-Oh! Legacy of the Duelist: Link Evolutionand needless to say people are excited. While this version of the game and its predecessor on PS4, Xbox One, and PC include one Rule Set across the entire game, Konami has revealed to us in an interview that this wasn’t always the case. In fact, the use of multiple Rule Sets in the game was actually toyed around with for some time, before ultimately being scrapped.
According to Charles Murakami, a producer at Konami, the development team considered using previous rules when dueling in certain missions. While Murakami didn’t go into detail about which specific rule sets the team was looking at, this more than likely meant that if you went into, for example, a duel from the original series, you’d be restricted to using rules and field layouts from that era. Given the fact thatYu-Gi-Oh!is an ever-changing game with new restrictions, cards, and features every year, this might have helped certain players get accustomed to the game easier. It turns out, however, this wasn’t the case.
“We wanted to make sure that players can use their own Deck creations in addition to the story-themed ones,” said Murakami. “Also, we found that it was confusing to new players when the field and rules kept changing. Ultimately, we found that sticking to one set of rules was the easiest to understand and fun for most players.”
While this may be disappointing for some fans who haven’t seen any of the newerYu-Gi-Oh!content likeARC-VandVrains,it should hardly come as a surprise. Murakami even specifically cited the inconsistencies it would raise, stating that Pendulum cards without Pendulum Zones and Link Monsters without the Extra Monster Zone were “problematic” and “unintuitive” respectively.
