Dandadanis only one episode in and the anime community has already decided to call it “overrated.” A common criticism that several anime faces is that the animation style carries the overall plot, making the storyline boring in comparison. One such popular anime isDemon Slayer, where many in the community truly believe the animation is what “carries” the popularity on its back. Now,Dandadanhas garnered similar criticism. The only difference is it’s only one episode in.

The studio forDandadan,Science Saru, has animated other popular series likeDevilman CrybabyandScott Pilgrim Takes Off. The studio has proven its calibre with how creative and visually crazy it can get.Dandadanbeing animated by Science Saru was the perfect choice for the original manga and its insane blend of genres.

IsDandadanOverrated or Are Anime Fans Impatient?

For those unfamiliar withDandadan, the original manga was only released back in 2021. Yukinobu Tatsu is the genius behind this hilarious blend of horror, romance and action. The story follows Momo Ayase, a confident high school girl, and Ken Takakura, an introverted boy with a fascination for the paranormal.

Momo defended Ken from bullies and ever since they slowly built a relationship. As the plot progresses, they face off against spirits and monsters, while maintaining a comedic tone and developing a romance between the two.

So far, the first episode is the only context new viewers have, and unsurprising, they have decided it is overrated and have begun hating the anime.

If you don’t have haters you ain’t doing something right

With just the first episode out, the viewers wouldn’t know enough about the story. Despite its fast pace, how can one episode represent the entire anime’s plotline? There’s so much more toDandadanthan the flashy, vibrant animation. It has the perfect balance of horror and comedy that isn’t easy to perfect. The characters have a charm of their own and it never gets tiring to watch them.

The fact that one episode makes viewers feel that the animation carrying the anime on its back is a testament tothe brilliance and creativityof the animation and its director’s vision but also how impatient the community can get. If one episode is enough to hate on an anime, you’ll miss out on unique storylines likeDandadan’s.

An Indirect Praise to the Animation

Whether or not the plot is to the taste of the viewers is subjective but with this criticism of it being overrated, there’s no denying the animation is phenomenal. Stunning animation often creates more viewers who are curious about why a visually brilliant anime would be hated.

The story being overshadowed by its animation isn’t necessarily the worst thing ever. Plenty of anime, such asTower of God,have strayed away from the source material and had bad animation. So far,Dandadanhas stayed faithful to the original manga.

The idea that the animation ofDemon Slayercarries the anime is subjectiveand not a fact, the same wayDandadanhas the potential to be divisive with its plot. It’s an experimental anime that won’t appeal to everyone. However, it doesn’t discount the fact thatDandadandeserves the gorgeous animation it’s getting.

Dandadanis available on Crunchyroll and Netflix.
