Today, 2K and Saber Interactive announcedWWE 2K Battlegroundswill release this Fall.

From the creators ofNBA 2K Playgrounds,WWE 2K Battlegroundsis a brand new wrestling game featuring arcade-style action and cartoonish recreations of your favorite WWE Superstars. As seen in the trailer below, you’ll enter some unconventional locales like an underground arena and a swamp with a crocodile that will seemingly eat you if you’re thrown out of the ring.

As of now, the only wrestlers that are confirmed are Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, John Cena, Becky Lynch, and Charlotte Flair. Each seems to have super-powered versions of their finishers. More information will be announced as its release approaches.

Additionally, 2K addressed last year’s wrestling entry,WWE 2K20, in itspress release. The company announced they will not be releasing a simulation-based wrestling game this year and extending its production timeline to 2021.

They have brought on Patrick Gilmore as Executive Producer to help Visual Concepts create a game that will appease both newcomers and seasoned players. Gilmore has worked on games such as Killer Instinct, Medal of Honor, and New World. Again, the press release states that more details on the project will be announced in the coming months.

A few weeks back, former WWE games writer Justin Leeper published a video where he statedWWE 2K21would be canceled. He also stated there would be a 2K wrestling game releasing this year from a different developer. Just a few days ago,WWE officially announced the nextWWE 2Kentry would not be releasing this yearwith the WWE games Twitter account teasing theWWE 2K Battlegroundsannouncement.

Personally, I am pretty excited aboutWWE 2K Battlegrounds. There is definitely room for an arcade-style wrestling game. Yes, Fire Pro Wrestling World exists, but it does have a pretty steep difficulty ceiling that could turn players off of the game. Something more streamlined, if done right, could be really awesome. Especially for wrestling fans like myself.

I also think delaying theWWE 2Krelease is a really solid plan.WWE 2K20’s launch was super rocky. The split between Yuke’s and Visual Concepts seems to have affected them tremendously. Taking more time to create a better experience is a solid strategy and one that hopefully has good results when the next simulation wrestling game launches.
