The largely popular MMO from Activision BlizzardÂWorld of Warcrafthas always been religiously tied to PC. While that probably won’t ever change, there has been some information from a datamine that has come to light which seems to indicate that players will be able to use a controller with the upcomingWorld of Warcraft: Shadowlands.ÂBlizzard has confirmed this is true in a forum post.On Twitter,Martin Benjaminsshared a screenshot of some strings of code apparently datamined by a user in a Discord they’re in. The code shows various inputs that all relate to different controller bindings. This, of course, led users to believe that either it was going to be support for controllers on PC, or perhapsWorld of Warcraft Shadowlandsmeant that it was heading to console.
Thankfully, community manager, Randy âKaivaxâ Jordanjumped onto the official forumsto address the situation and clear up any speculation. “For a long time, weâve seen a small number of players turn to 3rd party addons, […] to work through certain accessibility issues.”
“We always want to make WoW more widely accessible,” he continues, “inShadowlands, weâre attempting to add some support for keybinds, camera, and turning a character on controllers such as the Xbox Adaptive Controller.”
Adding official controller support is a fantastic move, especially considering new players may not be knowledgable in how to install third-party addons. So having the option to assign some inputs to controllers is great. It does seem as if the controllers will only act as an extension to the keyboard and mouse seeing as Randy Jordan only mentions keybinds, camera, and turning a character. Hopefully, the actual customization is a lot more advanced than that.
