You heard the news, Sora from theKingdom Heartsfranchise by Disney and Square Enix is the final DLC character ofSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, and all theKHcompilation games are coming to Switch - but there’s a catch, not onlyKingdom Hearts III, but everyKHgame on Switch will be Cloud only, with a subscription pass, and no actual ports or physical releases.
WhyKingdom Heartson Switch is Cloud only, with a subscription
Nintendo confirmed you’ll need a permanent internet connection to play theKingdom Heartscompilation games on Switch. That’s obvious seeing it’s Cloud only.
Meanwhile, theJapanese Twitter accountfor theKingdom Heartsseries explained we’ll be able to pay for the games separately or pay for all three. The games areKINGDOM HEARTS - HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMix, KINGDOM HEARTS HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, andKINGDOM HEARTS III.

Lastly, Nintendo Francementionedwe’ll be able to play a limited amount of the games before having to pay for a pass to play. Confirming this will be a Cloud gaming subscription. No price was revealed yet.
So yeah, not onlyKingdom Hearts III, but allKHcompilation games are Cloud only. Personally speaking, and I’m sure I echo the feelings of many, that’s definitely screwed up seeingKingdom Hearts 1and2are PS2 games. It looks like doing actual Switch ports wasn’t interesting enough business-wise, and Cloud is an easy solution.
As for why this is happening, it’s due to the newly HD rendered cinematics included in the compilations. Even if the games are PS2 games, the cinematics technically aren’t, and that might have been too much trouble for a proper Switch port.
Sora will be launching inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimateon October 18, for $6 USD.
