Fallout 4‘s Popular Questing System Has Been Taken FromSkyrim
After Bethesda and Todd Howard reinvigorated theFalloutfranchise with 2008’sFallout 3, they followed this up with the popularFallout 4in 2015. Set approximately a decade afterFallout 3, the game takes place in The Commonwealth, a survivor territory that’s based around Boston and the surrounding parts of New England. The game featured tons of new features and systems, one of those being the questing system.
In an interview with The Guardian, Howard touched upon the various aspects of Fallout 4’s development and gave us insight into the various design decisions. Howard also talked aboutFallout 4‘s questing system and how they’ve done a“better job”than what was seen in Skyrim.
“I can’t spoil it, but we’re doing a better job than we’ve ever done,”
Fallout 4‘s questing system was a major revolution compared to the previous entries in the franchise. Alongside the main, side, and additional questlines, it also featured the“radiant quest system.”Bethesda’s development team took the system right out of their previous hit,Skyrim, and further fleshed it out to alleviate player’s experience with the world around them inFallout.The way players tackle these quests determines the game’s ending, how NPCs behave, and other aspects of the game.

Bethesda has repeated multiple times that currently, The Elder Scrolls 6 is the studio’s main focus after it wrapped up work on the space RPG Starfield, which debuted in late 2023. Considering the fact that Xbox’s Head Phil Spencer saidduring last year’s Microsoft trialsthatThe Elder Scroll 6is years away, it’s safe to assume we’re unlikely to hear aboutFallout 5or its release for years to come.
