Although Rockstar Games continues to put most of its attention towardsGrand Theft Auto,Red Dead Redemption 2is undoubtedly one of the studio’s biggest successes ever and a masterpiece of a game that ended up defining an entire genre. Seriously, the amount of hidden details and graphical immersion will blow away anyone.

Red Dead Redemption 2has managed to sell nearly 64 million copies, which makes it the seventh best-selling title in the entire world. However, it may shock you to learn that Dan Houser and his team, while working on the game, almost gave up and axed the entirety of the project!
Red Dead Redemption 2 Was a Massive Project For Rockstar Games
Red Dead Redemption 2is considered to be one of the best games ever created. Set in a fictional version of the United States in 1899, it’s one of the most immersive games on the market and has been praised by critics and gamers alike for its realism.
“The original cast never even gets acknowledged”: Red Dead Redemption 2 Star Hopes Pedro Pascal’s ‘The Last of Us’ Will Bring a Necessary Change That Hollywood Has Ignored for Years
In aninterview, Dan Houser, Rockstar’s ex-creative director, revealed that when the studio started working on the game, they wanted to bring an authentic experience. However, if they had known how much work would go into it, they would’ve abandoned the project.
If we’d known how much work it was going to be then maybe we’d have backed off but once we committed we were like, ‘We’ve got to make this work, let’s have some fun with it.

Rockstar could’ve easily axedRed Dead Redemption 2if they wanted to. However, that’s not their style. They decided to stick with the project, and took everything gamers loved about the original game, and dialed it up to 11.
It took them eight years, but they managed to bring so much to the game’s world to the point it feels more like a cowboy simulator than an actual game!

There’s no denying that the game’s online mode was a miss, but we’re confident the studio has learned its lesson and could finally bring something that could rival GTA Online’s success in future entries of the franchise.
Is Rockstar Games Working on the Next Red Dead Redemption?
There’s no doubt thatRed Dead Redemption 2skyrocketed the franchise’s popularity to the next level. Despite all that, Rockstar still hasn’t said a word about the game’s sequel. However, that hasn’t stopped the rumor mill on the internet.
“It was one of the main reasons I was cast”: Red Dead Redemption 2’s Roger Clark Admits Unlikely Aspect of His Audition Was a Big Factor for Rockstar
While talking at the Jefferies Virtual Global Interactive Entertainment Conference last year, Take-Two’s CEO Strauss Zelnick discussed aboutRed Dead Redemption‘s success in recent years and stated,“If it’s really, really great, it will keep going.”He also drew comparisons between popular franchises such as James Bond and called“Red Dead”as enduring entities.
Currently,Rockstar is fast-trackingGrand Theft Auto 6‘s development, as it’s scheduled to release next year. Considering the studio’s past and the recent industry shift towards long development cycles, we might not seeRed Dead Redemption 3before 2023.

It’s sad, but if gamers want another genre-defining experience, it’s crucial to give Rockstar all the time they need to bring such a game.
