Video games have been a part of the Baftas since 1998. In 2004, the Bafta Game Awards was launched as a standalone event to showcase the exceptional creativity and storytelling involved in the makings of video games. However, two decades later, the US counterpart of the Baftas, the Emmys, and the Oscars have failed to replicate the integration taking place in the UK with the video game industry firmly out of question at the prestigious awards.

How Are Video Games Different and Why Is It a Good Thing?
Even with the technological advancements and the numerous critically acclaimed masterpieces that have come out of the video game industry, this continued lack of recognition from the mainstream industry is dubious, if not altogether questionable from the Oscars. Games likeRed Dead Redemption 2, Far Cry 3,Alan Wake 2,Witcher 3, and a host of others can give any established media like movies and TV shows a run for their money in terms of storytelling and entertainment.
Video games are primarily ‘lean forward’ experiences as opposed to the ‘lean back’ experience of movies and TV shows. But apart from that, all of them are forms of entertainment and are in themselves effective forms of media.

While they cannot be clubbed together with movies and TV shows, they can certainly be branded into a category of their own. The Baftas have their separate awards for separate entities with video games having their own category. But in the USA video game awards are not quite celebrated on the same level as those in the UK.
The equivalent award for video games in the USA will be the Game Awards. This Geoff Keighley-hosted show was previously known as Spike Video Game Awards started in 2003. Ever since 2014, they have continued as The Game Awards.

With the increase in popularity and reach of video games, it is high time for either the Oscars or the Emmys to broaden their categories and include video games. Or they can even partner up with The Game Awards to create a comprehensive award ceremony for video game releases of the year.
How Long Will the Video Game Industry Be Overlooked by the Oscars?
The gaming industry in the USA is worth over 57 billion dollars and it is projected to grow up to 90 billion dollars by 2029. And with the current advancements in technology, video games are improving by leaps and bounds. So, the question remains, how long can the mainstream award shows ignore the video game industry?

The Baftas have become a good way for the stalwarts of the video game industry to gain recognition in the UK which has led to an improvement in quality of work. With the works of smaller studios and teams coming to the fore, the recognition and visibility on offer have been crucial in the development of many of the video game development studios.
Whether The Game Awardscan someday reach the heights of the Baftas in terms of recognition and prestige or there will be another award altogether to signify the standout performances in the field of video games remains to be seen.

Let us know your thoughts on this matter in the comments. Do you think that there should be some collaboration between the top game developers and the Oscars and Emmys?
