Battling hordes of the undead can be a thrilling or frustrating experience, depending on how prepared you are. In Valkyrie Elysium, you will gain the power of a demigod as you fight to save the world from Ragnarök, but completing your mission will require more than just power; it will require skill.

As you traverse the game, you will encounter different types of enemies, all with varying degrees of challenge required for defeating them. Luckily, you have a slew of weapons and abilities to aid you in these endeavors. But knowing how and when to use them will make all the difference in you being victorious, or getting the dreaded “Game Over” screen. Here are some pro-tips to make sure you are always coming out on top.

5Mastering The Lock-on Button

Like most modern action RPGs, Valkyrie Elysium’s combat system allows you to lock on enemies by using the R3 button. Half the time, this mechanic can be intuitive and responsive as you flick the joystick to cycle between enemies. The other half of the time, it can be frustrating, often causing the camera to jump to the wrong enemy or pan your view into a wall.

To get the most out of this feature, you’ll need to be prepared to cycle it on and off depending on the circumstance. If you are trying to tackle the main enemy but find you keep locking on to the smaller ones, cycle the lock off and just use the joystick to manually pan the camera as needed. Just be sure to cycle it back on if you find yourself swinging at a wall.

4Prioritize Enemy Weaknesses

Most enemies have a particular elemental weakness. Paying attention to their elemental weakness and attacking with that element can make a big difference in how quickly you can dispose of each enemy. Attacking without their elemental weakness can mean you are laying down 2-3 times as many hits before their health is drained, and when you are surrounded by a half-dozen enemies with varying weaknesses, you’ll need to deal with them appropriately if you want to come out on top. There are three ways you can activate elemental powers: by summoning your Einherjar, imbuing your weapon with the desired element, or using a Divine Art. To summon your Einherjar, you hold R1 and press the corresponding button to their assignment. When they are summoned, your weapon will automatically be imbued with their element as long as they are active on the battlefield.

If you have more than one Einherjar summoned, you can switch between their elements by holding R1 and selecting the corresponding button. Switching back and forth between those elements on the fly will give you a huge advantage as you tackle the various enemies on the battlefield. Additionally, some enemies have weak spots that you can target. These are typically found on your larger enemies like dragons or the various boss enemies. When locked on to these types of enemies, you can cycle the lock to all the various hit points they have. When you find the gold-colored one, that is their weak spot (eg. a dragon’s tail).

3Maximizing Elemental Crush

Each enemy has three status indicators: health, elemental weakness, and elemental gauge. As you land blows with their corresponding elemental weakness, the elemental gauge will fill up. When it hits the max, the enemy will be crushed. For a short time, this will stop their attacks and allow you to unleash a flurry of blows, uninhibited. As their elemental gauge starts to deplete during this time, you will have an opportunity to refill it and completely immobilize them.

To maximize this opportunity, after you have initially triggered an elemental crush, it is best to wait until their elemental gauge has depleted by about 75%. At that point, you’re able to unleash a divine art, in the enemy’s elemental weakness, completely refill the gauge and immobilize them. Adopting this technique will maximize the amount of time that they are unable to attack, and if done correctly, will allow you to dispose of them entirely before they ever recover.

2Soul Chain Combos

Using your Soul Chain ability is not only thrilling, it’s a great way to get around the battlefield while stringing together endless combos. Some enemies will take dozens of hits before going down, so stringing together the right combos and stopping them from attacking you is ideal. One of the most effective ways to do this is by using multiple Soul Chain attacks on a single enemy.

To start the combo, use a Soul Chain attack to move to the targeted enemy. Once you have connected, unleash your preferred combo on them. When your combo finishes, the enemy will have a brief chance to recover. You can eliminate this chance by starting another Soul Chain attack, followed by another combo. This works with the enemy on the ground or in the air, and if done properly, will keep them completely immobilized as you take down their health.

1Unlock Soul Steal Early

Soul Steal is one of the many skills you can unlock as you level up your Valkyrie. When this skill is performed, it will allow you to immediately generate a soul orb that will fill part of your soul gauge. This is especially useful when you are summoning multiple Einherjar at a time, since each time they are summoned it depletes a part of the soul gauge.

The best way to obliterate the battlefield is to have all of your Einherjar summoned at once. Not only will they be independently doing damage to the hordes of undead, but having them all summoned means you can easily cycle through all the major element types when imbuing your weapon. Each Einherjar can only be on the battlefield for a certain amount of time, and normally you would have to kill enemies to slowly restore your soul gauge if you wanted to resummon them. Mixing Soul Steal into your regular combos will mean your soul gauge is never depleted, effectively allowing you to keep your whole team summoned through the entirety of the battle, making you unstoppable.
