As the years have gone by, fans have seen Tom Cruise’sMission: Impossibleunravel the many layers of its story. Starting from a simpler story and turning into something much greater, many characters have come and gone as the movies have come out. While some have faded into the complexity of the story, having done their part, others have met more tragic fates.

Most recently, audiences saw Rebecca Ferguson’s Ilsa Faust die at the hands of Gabriel, leaving her to be painfully found by Ethan Hunt, who was late by a few minutes. It is safe to say that this death will deeply affect him. However, it would seem that the franchise is not done with its casualties, and this time, the emotional payoff may be personal to the fans too.
Mission: Impossible—The Final ReckoningTrailer Teases Character Death
Recently, the trailerforMission: Impossible—The Final Reckoningwas released, and fans cannot stop analyzing it to their greatest abilities. Even though it features all the elements that make the franchise iconic and make fans excited about what it is, there was one detail that fans could not help but notice. Despite the franchise and the film having its focus onTom Cruise’sEthan Hunt, the emphasis of the trailer was on another character.
Ving Rhames’ Luther Stickell was notably in the background ofMission: Impossible—Dead Reckoning Part One, not playing a very big role in the story of the film. However, with the release of the trailer, one can immediately tell that he is going to play a bigger role in the upcoming film.

Not only was he narrating in the trailer, but he also showed up in it more than he usually would. The final conversation before the credits rolled was also between Luther and Ethan, and throughout that trailer, there were mentions of Cruise’s character having to sacrifice something or someone.
Luther’s Death Would Be More Painful Than Ilsa Faust’s
It has become a common theme in media that if a character gets a lot of screen time in any project, they are likely to die very soon. Considering the messaging in the trailer ofMission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning, as well as the emphasis on Ving Rhames’s character, it is very likely that he would end up dying by the time the film is over.
Although Rebecca Ferguson’s Ilsa Faust dying was one of the most painful moments in the entire franchise, there is no denying that Luther’s death would hurt a lot more.Ving Rhameshas been a part of the franchise from the very beginning, with his character appearing in every single film. He has played a very important role to the protagonist and has been a cherished member of the series for a reason.

Tom Cruise Will Need a Miracle and the Marketing of His Lifetime to Earn a Single Dollar Profit From Mission Impossible 8
While fans may wish that his character does not get killed off in the upcoming film for their own sentimentality, there is no denying that Luther’s death would be a very good path to take Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt down. Being a very important part of his life, his passing could be impactful in more ways than one.
If Hunt is forced to choose between the world and Luther, as the trailer suggests, the moral implications of that would be very interesting to explore. However, if Luther becomes a causality like Ilsa, it could send Ethan down a revenge and vengeance path that could showcase a new side of him.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoningis set to release on July 10, 2025.
