Gladiator 2trailer unveils a historically accurate epic with thrilling action
RememberRidley Scott’s2023 historical epic,Napoleon? The one that raked in millions but had historians sharpening their critique pens? Get ready for another round, becauseGladiator 2is here—epic action, primed to be a blockbuster, but loosey-goosey with history? Nah, not this time.
CinemaCon 2024 attendees spilled the beans on the first trailer forGladiator 2, and it’s a wild ride (viaHollywood Reporter). The film did make CinemaCon entertaining, with star Paul Mescal calling working on it a“standout moment.”Mescal plays Denzel Washington as a grudge-holding ex-slave recruiting a gladiator who ditches his noble family to become Maximus Decimus Meridius 2.0.

While there have been questions about this film’s factual origins, it turns outGladiator 2is pretty accurate in this regard.“This is historically accurate, look it up,”a fan took to X, describing the action film’s trailer scenes.
This is historically accurate. Look it up.
Speaking of epic, theGladiator 2trailerthrows in war scenes and naval battle. Believe it or not, naval battles (called naumachia) are something ancient Romans did as entertainment. It’s built on the body of a lake (using both natural and man-made water bodies) and dates back to more than 100 years.
“Didn’t he learn from his GoT days?”: Pedro Pascal Rules in Gladiator 2 Trailer But Game of Thrones Fans are Concerned for Obvious Reason
In the trailer, we also see Pedro Pascal as the new bad guy. Think Commodus 2.0—because of course. The trailer ends with an iconic line,“The Gods have spoken,”sealing the deal for us fans that this one’s gonna be historically-apt and binge-worthy.
But here’s the thing—remember the criticismNapoleongot for playing fast and loose with facts? There’s areason why the historiansweren’t a bigNapoleonfan, butGladiator 2seems to not be heading in that direction too. The film scenes like the naval battle on the colosseum, man-eating monkeys, Napoleon firing at the Egyptian pyramid, the bombing of the pyramids, etc. have historical basis (apparently Romans did have a thing for fighting on water… who knew?).

“I have my doubts already”: Gladiator 2 Trailer is Already Raising Red Flags Thanks to Ridley Scott’s One Decision That Could Entirely Ruin the Film
So, willGladiator 2be a history buff’s dream? Most likely. Will it be a thrilling, action-packed adventure? Absolutely. With Scott’s previous failed attempt withNapoleon, his upcoming filmGladiator 2might seem like rewriting history.
Napoleon: From dream project to box office disaster
Ridley Scott’s filmNapoleon, which aired on Nov. 22 last year, wasn’t exactly a box office triumph. Despite a hefty budget (somewhere between $130 and $200 million!) and big names like Scott himself and Joaquin Phoenix,Napoleontanked with$221 millionopening worldwide.
So, what went wrong? Critics were divided. Some pointed out historical inaccuracies, while others found the movie’s runtime a total slog. The R-rating didn’t help either, limiting the audience. Plus, Napoleon hit theaters when competition was fierce, and audiences opted for other blockbusters. All that hype forNapoleonfizzled faster than a damp firework. Ouch.

Ridley Scott’sGladiator 2is all set to hit theaters on July 18, 2025.
