Mushoku Tenseiis considered to be the pioneer of all the isekai anime series, and numerous fans and critics alike even call it the “father” of this genre. The anime series presents an insane world-building with some of the most immersive, rich, and detailed fictional characters to ever exist. The amount of lore and intricate storylines it has drew audiences to its complex yet engaging world.

However, deep beneath its fascinating world lies a more sinister aspect ofMushoku Tensei, which has literally left fans and critics alike worried because of the controversy surrounding the whole issue. It all revolves around the main protagonist and his mentality and behavior, exploring the issues about pedophilic themes in anime or entertainment media. This raises some serious questions about storytelling inMushoku Tenseiand the responsibility the creators have on their audience.
Mushoku Tenseicould be way better if not for this one aspect!
It has been seen multiple times the main character ofMushoku Tensei, Rudeus, doing inappropriate things, such as s*xual desires toward underaged female characters. It is as if the author is deliberately glorifying such negative actions, and it seems like he is self-inserting himself into the story. This creative decision has raised questions about the show’s depiction of pedophilia and its effects on the audience.
Unlike Redeus, Sylphy’s Hair Transformation in Mushoku Tensei Could be a Permanent Change Because of This Reason
The bigger concern is how the fandom easily accepts Rudeus’s behavior! The author initially wrote Rudeus like this as an attempt that everyone would like him, but he fails to remove its shortcomings. Only ifMushoku Tenseihad gone about it a bit differently, turning Rudeus’ behavior around as a cautionary tale against pedophilia rather than promoting it, the series would have potentially been far better.
Exploring such aspects of this idea could have been really a game-changer for the series and achieved a more impactful plot. Instead, the problematic portrayal of pedophilia has been kept on tainting the series, and so the growth and character development of some of the most important characters are minimized.

The series somewhat acts as a representation of the Otaku Culture’s fetishes
While Rudeus might look young in his current body, his mind and inner voice are undoubtedly that of a mature adult. Being from the real world, reincarnated into this world, makes his actions inexcusable by modern standards. Knowing what he is doing and the implications behind it only makes his behavior worse. Even though the age of consent is different in the world of Mushoku Tensei,Rudeus’ actions would still be unacceptableby our world’s standards.
Rudeus has a physical appearance that is designed to be pleasant, and so this makes other characters let pass his problematic behavior. However, this is actually kind of romanticizing the questionable actions of Rudeus, as his current body might not be allowed as an excuse for his ulterior motives.

If such concerning elements had not been there in the series, perhaps the story ofRudeus’ redemption and self-improvementmight have been told in a better way. But currently, the series is only teaching us how an otaku can only be redeemed by reincarnation to hunt young girls!

Despite its problematic elements, the plot ofMushoku Tensei’smain storyline remains equally interesting and engaging. The epic world-building and iconic moments of the series have still attracted fans, and the hype surrounding the third season is solid proof of that. However, it is necessary to acknowledge the series’ flaws in the narrative and consider how its problematic themes can affect younger audiences.
