An indie game developer hit the social media jackpot recently, as a video of their upcomingSteamgame went super viral, having amassed (as of the writing of this article) over 13 million views and 170,000 likes onTwitter, due to the title’s distinctly unique style of animation. All characters in Scarlet Deer Inn, the game in question, have been animated via actual physical embroidery.

As seen in the trailer below, the game’s characters and animals all have a noticeable cloth-like finish on them, as well as pleasant fluidity in their movements, but, further towards the end, we see that these aren’t just post-production effects, but instead that indeed every frame of their animations has been embroidered with a physical sewing machine.

The commitment and attention to detail is certainly impressive. This looks to be the newest style of animation set to draw eyes in the indie space due to its rarity. A distinct visual style is an effective way to get eyes on your game, and with how competitive the indie game market is currently, you certainly want to do anything you can to stand out.

We’ve seen many examples of indie games that have done so.Shovel Knightstood out with its nostalgic pixel art,Cupheadhad a famously strenuous development cycle to achieve its now iconic 1930s-style rubberhose animation, in which they had to hand draw every single frame. And over time we’ve seen many other indie games attempt to stand out with styles like watercolor painting, comic-book cel-shading, flash game finishes, and more.

Developer Attu Games have seemingly found its own striking style with Scarlet Deer Inn. And it seems to be that, more than just how the game looks, people are impressed with the amount of time and effort Attu Games must be putting into animating its characters this way.

Scarlet Deer is described as an “action-adventure game with an emotional story, dark underground full of monsters, and a setting inspired by Slavic folklore.” It follows the red-headed protagonist Elise, a mother of two with nothing particularly special about her, that gets thrust into a dark and mysterious adventure that has her platforming through the monster-filled underground.

The description on itsSteam pagealso states that all Elise will have with her is a torch, so the game will seemingly focus purely on platforming and will eschew combat. Scarlet Deer Inn has yet to be given a release window.
