If there’s anything superhero movies try to stay away from over the past years, it’s the exhibition of s*x scenes. The majority ofcomic book films don’t show this type of mature theme as it would affect the rating and viewership.

This is the dilemma of renowned director Richard Linklater when it comes to creating movies. The lack of intimate scenes in superhero films has swiftly become the trend in Hollywood.
Richard Linklater Slams Superhero Movies For Not Including S*x Scenes
During his interview withThe Times, filmmakerRichard Linklateraired his frustration over movies that don’t feature sensual themes. He claimed that s*x is a great way to sell films and wondered why Hollywood changed its rules.
Sx and violence is what cinema is great at. Sx was always the great seller; I don’t know why they backed off from that. Hollywood started feeding this new generation characters that were sxless. Superheroes don’t have sx. They don’t have genitalia, frankly.

A similar sentiment was shared by directorSteven Soderberghwho said that blockbuster films don’t depict a lot of erotic sequences. He said viaThe Daily Beast:
The fantasy-spectacle universe, as far as I can tell, typically doesn’t involve a lot of f—king, and also things like—who’s paying these people? Who do they work for? How does this job come to be?

But times are changing now. Marvel Studios has been slowly trying to inject some of the ‘spicy’ stuff into their projects. Take, for example,X-Men ‘97. The series has been exploring mature themes that the studio hasn’t even dared to touch in the past.
Brad Winderbaum ConfirmsX-Men ‘97Explored The S*x In The Comics
Marvel’sBrad Winderbaumaddressed the fact that mutants inX-Men ‘97do have s*x in an interview withVariety.
Part of the ethos of the show is to emulate our memory of the original cartoon and honor the source material. In every page of “X-Men” is human desire, and how it leads to romance, to complications, to people’s awakenings in various ways over the years… Part of that is about human desire and passion.

The head of Marvel TV did not elaborate on this one but it’s clear that the studio is still exploring different methods on how to incorporate the subject into the bloodstream of their projects.
So far, only violence and gore have been profusely used, and they are widely accepted by the general audience. S*x scenes, however, remain a debatable issue, especially in comic book adaptations.
