For a long, long time, Hollywood had relegated Zack Snyder to a somewhat diminished status as a director for his previously difficult experiences with Warner Bros. Both his attempts at adapting comic books to live-action films had been deemed a severe failure of creative and artistic sensibilities. Yet, the films in question –Watchmenand DCEU – raised an army of fans who have been unwavering in their fealty to Snyder.

Guillermo del Toro has had a somewhat similar experience in the industry as well. The director, famously known for his love for the bizarre, has nearly 20 fully-developed scripts in his possession that were never made into a movie. Despite his Oscar-winning credentials and unique artistic vision, Hollywood has hardly done right by del Toro.

However, even beyond their underappreciated vision as auteurs, there is a singular quality that unifies both Snyder and del Toro under one creative umbrella.

Zack Snyder & Guillermo del Toro’s Hollywood pains

WhenStar Warscame into existence, the movie industry changed forever by elevating the sci-fi genre into a stronghold of artistic storytelling, visionary cinematography, operatic space saga, and scope for a profitable audience market. As a teenager,Zack Snyderfell in love with the universe. As a filmmaker, he wanted to recreate Star Wars in his vision. He was rejected.

Guillermo del Torohas often, and publicly, lamented about his failed attempts at getting a script made, despite delivering iconic and profitable movie classics such asPan’s Labyrinth,Hellboy, andPacific Rim.19 fully developed scriptsnow gather dust in a locked drawer at his desk while Hollywood keeps churning out unoriginal, uninspired, and reductive movies without a vision.

Despite del Toro and Snyder’s wildly different approaches to movie genres, their filmmaking process follows a similar technique that makes their projects so unique as compared to other directors when realized on the big screen. In an interview withLooper, Hunnam revealed:

They’re both obviously master filmmakers. They both draw and realize their vision prior to shooting with a pad of paper and a set of pencils. They both create enormous universes, and unlike some directors that create big universes where it’s all CGI, they both like to create as much practical in the immediate vicinity that the actors and the directors are going to be working in. There are a lot of similarities.

However, Hunnam also claimed that while del Toro is more precise in his vision for the stories he tells, Snyder loves to be caught up in the moment and work with whatever inspiration may strike. Their varied approaches to the moviemaking process work in their favor, as already proven by thebeloved cult followingthat both del Toro and Snyder’s works have amassed through the years.
