Elden Ring’smuch-awaited expansion,Shadow of the Erdtree, is set to release on 21st June this year. As players wait for the DLC to arrive, one can’t help but wonder about how FromSoftware is going to re-create the magic of an open-world game this time. One of the key aspects of the expansion lies in its map.

While many may assume that it’s as big as Limgrave (one of the starting areas in the base game), turns out that the truth is a bit different than that. Players can expect to to experience something even larger, more intricate, and enigmatic going forward.
FromSoftware Has Tried to Lower Your Expectations
Ideally, a game studio would hype players in hopes of building the anticipation for an upcoming expansion or game. In the case of FromSoftware, however, things may work a little differently. For the last two years,Elden Ringplayers have been eagerly waiting to see how the DLC is going to shape the game’s story and experience moving forward.
“I shouldn’t be watching this”: First Look at Shadow of the Erdtree’s Bosses Leaves Elden Ring Fans Unable to Avoid the Spoilers
Even though FromSoftware’s director, Hidetaka Miyazaki, hashinted at the map’s size earlier, information available now paints a different picture of the DLC. According to PC Gamer’sinterviewwith Miyazaki,Shadow of the Erdtree’smap size was conceptualized with some certainty in mind:
At the very outset there were a lot of possibilities, but one of the things that was determined very early on was that size. We wanted that sense of scale for this map, because we wanted an experience for the player that was going to match that of the base game.

Miyazaki continued beating around the bush a little, hinting at the sense of familiarity players would feel once they stepped into the Land of Shadow.
We wanted them to experience that sense of discovery, and that sense of wonder and exploration again. We needed a map that was going to uphold that and bolster that.

Expecting the new map to be about the size of Limgrave can be a bit realistic, but it’s safe to say that the location is not just huge, but almost twice as complex too.
