Fans of Netflix’s Emmy-nominated fantasy epicThe Witcherwill have to wait until next summer for their third season-long jaunt with Geralt of Rivia, but they’ll have a spinoff series to tide them over in just over three months.
Announced Saturday during Netflix’sTudumevent, there wasn’t too much information available on the third season other than when we can expect to see it, nor is production of the season at a point where an official trailer was ready for release. Netflix had announced back in April that the show had resumed filming, but the production crew had run into trouble putting together key scenes after lead actor Henry Cavill, who plays Geralt, came down with Covid-19, as this story fromCBRindicates.

Freya Allan and Anya Chalotra will return to the main cast as Ciri and Yennifer, respectively, andForbeshas reported that instead of sitting out the first half as he did in season two, fan-favorite bard Jaskier, played by Joey Batey, will join the adventure from the first episode of the season.
Unlike the first season of The Witcher, which premiered in late 2019 and left viewers guessing where and when in the timeline each episode was taking place, the second season took a much more standard format to storytelling, with the premiere episode being mostly a standalone adventure/mystery featuring Geralt and Ciri and the rest of the season’s episodes following in sequential order. Considering that the first season’s rather chaotic approach to storytelling was among its most frequent criticisms, it’s likely the third season will continue to stick to the standard, sequential format. The season two finale left us with the return of Yen’s magic but an indication that The Wild Hunt and Ciri’s no-longer-presumed-dead father will be posing a lot of problems for the heroes.
While details on The Witcher Season 3 are still scant, we do know a bit more about The Witcher: Blood Origins, which is set to premiere December 25 on the steaming platform. The spinoff will take place roughly 12 centuries prior to the events of its source material and will star Lenny Henry (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban) and Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; Crazy Rich Asians). Among the plot elements we can expect from the miniseries are the creation of the first witcher and the fall of an ancient civilization.
