In the climax, Cloud deflected Sephiroth’s blade but in reality, he delivered a killing blow. The party rallied towards their fallen comrade and fought to avenge her. The remake trilogy introduces a multiverse concept with alternate realities and different versions of characters crossing paths as Cloud encounters more than one Aerith and even aids him in the final battle.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 Could Address What Happened to Aerith Gainsborough
Red XIII could still sense Aerith’s presence after dying in Cloud’s arms while the rest were grieving. Tifa mourned for her friend and noticed Cloud’s lack of grief since he could still see her in his way without any explanation. Perhaps Aerith became one with the planet and chose to reveal herself to certain people, or it is an alternate version that haunts him.
A Few of You Might Have Issues Playing Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Thanks to a Mistake by Square Enix
The remake trilogy is not a traditional remake. Square Enix can add new elements to spice up the story like bringing back Zack Fair into an alternate timeline where he is alive and well and was pulled out of his timeline to help Cloud fight Sephiroth and confuse casual players even more.
The gaming community has a few fan theories after Aerith’s death and most lean toward Cloud’s declining mental health. Perhaps she is a figment of his imagination that he uses as a crutch after his failure while the rest of the party is ready to let her rest in peace.

The final chapter will likely tie all loose ends and explain Aerith’s death better than the original version. This is an opportunity to learn from past mistakes.
