The Outer Worldsfrom Obsidian Entertainment and Private Division has quickly become one of the most anticipated RPGs of the year after beingannounced at The Game Awardsduring the fallout (pun-intended) of Bethesda’s extremely disappointingFallout 76.The Outer Worldsis actually GameInformer’s cover story this month, so we’ve been learning about things like how the developers areresponding to hypeas well asthe game’s length and size. A video focused on combat was recently released, and in it we learned about a new role players can take: leadership.
Co-Director Tim Cain put leadership on the same level as combat, dialogue and stealth when describing the fundamental roles players can take on in T Ultimately, players who go down this route with their skill points will end up not being as strong themselves when it comes to combat but will receive bonuses based on their companions. Considering that companions can only die on the highest difficulty, this leadership role definitely becomes and interesting choice.
“We definitely wanted to ensure that this game supported companion combat because we have a new role in addition to combat and stealth and dialogue called the leadership role,” Tim said. “The leader character will swap in and out companions to gain access to their skills and the leader, because he spent points in that, isn’t as proficient in combat as a pure combat character. So he gains the combat skills of his companions and they’re really important for him to have.”
The Outer Worlds’Lead Designer Charles Staples then delved into what exactly the role of the companion system is inThe Outer Worlds. “So companions, just by being there, will help out with dealing damage. They’ll also grab agro from enemies,” he said. “Players can also direct them to attack specific targets and then they also have special companion abilities, which is a special move that can be used in certain scenarios to inflict certain status effects on enemies.”
He went on to call companion abilities the game’s “specials”, so it does make sense to frame a brand new RPG role around them. That being said, each companion will have “advantages and disadvantages,” so some strategy and planning does have to go into deciding who you travel with.
