The upcomingMinecraftmovie is under fire from fans after a behind-the-scenes video by Jack Black briefly showed what many believe could be an AI-generated image in the star’s trailer. While there have yet to be any official images or trailers for the upcoming adaptation released, many believe the potential use of AI completely misses the point of what Minecraft encompasses.

A potential Minecraft movie or television adaptation has been thrown around for well over 10 years now, with the first instance occurring back in 2012 when Mojang said it had been “approached by a number of high-profile Hollywood producers” looking to adapt the popular game into a television show, asreported by VG247.

minecraft aether mod updated

The iconic Minecraft mod has made its triumphant return.

Flash forward to today and Hollywood stars such as Jack Black, Jason Momoa, and Kate McKinnon are all set to star in an official movie adaptation. While the castwrapped filming on the project last week, Minecraft won’t be released in theatres until July 09, 2025.

Story details and character information remain somewhat of a mystery, but a new behind-the-scenes video from Jack Black seemingly confirmed that he would be playing Minecraft’s main character, Steve. While it washeavily speculated beforehand, Black seemed to practically confirm the rumour with a short clip of him entering his trailer with a “Steve” sign on the front door.

Unfortunately, it was what fans saw inside of the star’s trailer that sparked controversy online.

Minecraft Movie Fans In Uproar After Spotting Potential AI Image

Jack Black’s short behind-the-scenes video was reposted by the popular film and television news account,DiscussingFilm. After gaining over 2.4 million views on X (formerly Twitter), fans began expressing their dissatisfaction with what appeared to be AI-generated imagery inside of Jack Black’s trailer.

The image in question can be seen at the 20-second mark of the video below. While there’s no way to know for sure if this image was created by AI, it doesn’t appear to be from any official Minecraft screenshots.

One user quote-retweeted the videoand said, “Making an adaptation of a series solely based on creativity and imagination and then using AI is insane actually.” In response, another user speculatedthat an employee for the Minecraft movie Googled a simple term such as ‘Minecraft Steve’ and used one of the images provided. But a quick Google search doesn’t seem to show the image seen in Black’s video, at least not in the UK, anyway.

However, another user did note that a separate image seen in Jack Black’s trailer is actually a fan render, as opposed to an official image. While the render has become somewhat iconic in the Minecraft community, it shows that whoever put those posters up wasn’t doing their due diligence.

While fanscontinued to express their disappointmentover the potential use of AI for Jack Black’s trailer, this likely doesn’t have any representation as to what the final product will be. The people in charge of creating a movie will have no input on actor’s trailers, so there’s no need to jump to the conclusion that the Minecraft movie will feature tons of AI-generated images.
