While you may knowEdge of Tomorrow, the science-fiction film starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, the story was first a light novel calledAll You Need Is Killby Hiroshi Sakurazaka. It’s incredibly rare for a Japanese light novel to first receive a live-action before an anime adaptation.

Edge of Tomorrowwas hailed as one of the most innovative science-fiction films in the 2010s. It deserves the title, but the credit for its storyline goes to Sakurazaka’sAll You Need Is Kill.Without the author’s masterful storytelling, we wouldn’t have Major William Cage in the first place.
STUDIO4°C, the animation studio behind theBerserkfilm trilogy, has picked upAll You Need Is Killfor an animated feature film. While we won’t be getting a full episodic series, a film is more than enough to adapt Keiji Kiriya’s gruesome journey.

All You Need Is Killis a science-fiction masterpiece that we can’t wait for
Hiroshi Sakurazaka’sAll You Need Is Killis vastly different fromEdge of Tomorrow. While Tom Cruise’s character is a reluctant soldier, Keiji Kiriya is much more bloodthirsty. He signed up for this, and though they both had zero experience, Keiji was willing to do anything to become the best.
The animated film forAll You Need Is Killwill be more loyal to the original light novel rather than having its own take on it. After all, Kiriya’s journey also deserves to be adapted. He is ruthless and it’s honestly refreshing to see a lead who will do what it takes in a cruel world rather than be a hero.

You May Not Know But Tom Cruise’s Underrated Sci-fi Movie Edge of Tomorrow Was Inspired From Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s Novel
The only aspect of Sakurazaka’s light novel that disappointed fans was the ending. When the animated film adaptation was announced, the most common opinion was that STUDIO4°C should adapt an original ending, just likeEdge of Tomorrowdid.
Hot take: I love Edge of Tomorrow a lot and I read the manga adaptation of the novel and though I thought it was really good, I’m not a fan of the ending.Personally, it’s too sad and bleak for me.I’m curious to see an anime take on this original novel.

Ah fck, I don’t want to remember the manga ending, pls make an original ending like the Hollywood movie
I like the Manga but i actually think Edge of Tomorrow is largely the better aside from like a handful aspects. The Time Loop mechanics are way better in the manga as well as the ending though the movie does lose points for not calling Tom Cruise “Killer Cage” like in the manga.

While it’s true that the light novel and manga’s ending were bleak, it is still consistent with the storyline. All You Need Is Killis a realistic dystopian science-fiction story, not a heroic daydream.
IsEdge of Tomorrowconsidered a successful manga adaptation?
While it is based on Sakurazaka’sAll You Need Is Kill, the story ofEdge of Tomorrowis more tuned toward a Western audience. It doesn’t add anything to the time-loop genre that anime hasn’t already explored. It appeases those who prefera hopeful endingrather than accepting the cruel world.
Everyone loves a good story of sacrifice but is it a sacrifice if Cage doesn’t stay dead? It’s more noble than what Kiriya did, that is for sure, but Hollywood seems to be reluctant to kill its heroes. The ending is what sets it apart fromAll You Need Is Kill.
“I’m going to play with that as well”: Edge of Tomorrow 2 is Not a Distant Dream When the Director Knows Exactly What to Do With Tom Cruise
Still,Edge of Tomorrowremains in everyone’s hearts as one of the best science-fiction films. It’s made a name of its own and is considered a successful adaptation by most fans of the original light novel. Some even prefer the movie. Perhaps the animated film will change their mind.
