Naughty DogGame Director Vinit Agarwal has revealed exactly how the studio created the game’s final battle between Abby and Ellie inThe Last Of Us: Part 2, and the process included a step that we didn’t expect.
Responding to a fan on X (formerly known as Twitter), Agarwal revealed that when designing Ellie’s AI for her final battle against Abby, he and another dev actually loaded into the fight as two real players and 1v1’d each other. The purpose of this incredible battle was to ensure that Ellie’s AI felt “as much like a real human player as possible,” according to Agarwal. The dev says he then “hand scripted Ellie’s AI to match that experience.”

Although The Last Of Us: Part 2 predominantly revolves around Ellie, there is a section that sees players take control of Abby, who is on the hunt for Ellie. During ‘The Confrontation’ chapter, the two finally collide as Abby discovers Ellie and her friends have set up camp inside of a theatre. You’ll still be controlling Abby during this fight, and the aim is to kill Ellie.
If you’ve already completed The Last Of Us: Part 2, you’ll be well aware that this chapter isn’t easy, and it looks like that’s because of Naughty Dog’s little 1v1. In response, one fan said, “Oh so THAT’S why I was cursing at the screen for hours waiting to respawn and fail all over again and again?! Torturers.” While another said it “makes sense” with how she acts during the fight.
