While 2020 gave us the long-awaitedÂThe Last of Us Part IIand the next chapter of Ellie’s story, Sony has more in store with the franchise withtheir upcoming TV adaptation that is in the works at HBO. Headed byÂChernobyl’s Craig Mazin, the series is still in the very early stages of development, but it could likely wind up airing against thatÂotherpopular zombie TV series,The Walking Dead, within the next few years. In a report fromÂInsider, ÂThe Walking Deadchief content officer Scott Gimple shared a few thoughts on the potential that HBO’sÂThe Last of UsÂseries could air during the run of AMC’sThe Walking Dead, which is set to conclude in 2022. On that thought, Gimple stated that he thinksÂThe Last of Usis “an amazing game” with impressive creators behind it, but added that “it’s incredibly different thanÂThe Walking Dead,” appearing not too concerned about the similarly-themed shows and if they might air in the same timeframe.Of course, zombies are no stranger to TV and film, withÂThe Walking Deadespecially being one of the most prominent examples of the genre over the last ten years. There also hasn’t been any official confirmation just yet of the official air date for HBO’s series, but with the show to start production sometime in the near future, there’s a fairly decent chance that the post-apocalyptic zombie shows could air head-to-head.
At the moment, details on HBO’s adaptation ofÂThe Last of UsÂare scarce, but so far it seems likely to adapt the storyline and events of the first game and (potentially) some ofÂPart II. The series wasofficially greenlit for a full season order by HBOearlier this month, and Mazin (the writer/producer of the series) has expressed that the series willtake the opportunity to explore the franchise from different angles.
As revealed earlier this year, AMC announced thatThe Walking Deadwill end its run in 2022 with a two-part extended final season, the first of which will air in 2021. While the flagship series will come to end, AMC is currently producing the spin-off seriesÂFear the Walking DeadandÂThe Walking Dead: World Beyond, and plans to air an additional spin-off series focused onÂTWDÂmainstays Daryl and Carol in 2023. Additionally, a series ofTWDfilms is also in the works with Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes, who left the series in its ninth season in 2018.
