The storytelling inAttack on Titanis highly regarded by a majority of anime fans. Hajime Isayama gradually enriched the plot by expanding the small world within the walls that was first presented to us. Many consider Isayama’s storytelling skills to be the holy grail of foreshadowing and great planning, but only up to a certain point. Re-watching the series can be an extremely interesting process as it helps spot all the minute details that hint towards the potential ending.

However, it can also be a bit stressful as the quality of the narrative inAttack on Titanexperiences an evident dip near the end. It’s hard to ignore the numerous plotlines that were left unattended by the mangaka. While the fandom has found its own explanations of those unresolved aspects of the story, there’s no denying thatAttack on Titanhas many gaps throughout the story.

Attack on Titanand unresolved plotlines go hand in hand

Attack on Titanwas initially a story about humans vs. monsters, which then evolved into an intricate tale about humanity’s true nature. For the most part,Hajime Isayamadid a brilliant job at building up the tension for the major events in the series. The intense build-up was then followed by exciting revelations. What was once a neatly woven story slowly began to unravel incoherently, and the flaws in the series were out in the open for fans to assess.

While Isayama gets endlessly praised for his exceptional writing skills, there were many loose ends that were never tied up. Beginning with Colossal Titan’s sudden disappearance when Eren was about to attack it. This minor inconsistency began to sting more when it was revealed inseason 3that the bones remain even if the Titan uses his steam to vanish. Near the end the inconsistencies became more frequent.

MAPPA Really Deserves Credit for Attack on Titan’s Peak Plot Twist Moment That Almost Broke the Internet

There were many things that were said but their effects or future were never delved into for instance Historia’s pregnancy or Hange’s research. Fans were truly enraged with the mangaka when with how conveniently the Rumbling was executed. The hallucigenia’s existence was shrouded in mystery until the end.

We still have no idea how Mikasa travelled all the way from the battlefield to Paradis without any forms of transportation, as they were all destroyed during the Rumbling. Moreover, how did the main cast manage to withstand the Eldians’ wrath after they killed their savior? All these plot elements remain unanswered to this day.

The controversial ending was a culmination of all the flaws

Over the years, the discourse surrounding the controversial ending of the series has changed a lot. Initially, the majority of readers were disappointed with how the manga ended, but most of them gradually warmed up to the final developments. The anime ending also helpedin softening the blow. However, the ending is a culmination of all the flaws in the series. Isayama disregarded the key details for the overarching execution of the ending he had in mind.

The ending was neither happy nor sad, it felt incomplete and didn’t align with the rest of the narrative. The rushed execution was extremely different from Isayama’s meticulous writing in the rest of the series. While the flaws were few and far in between at the beginning, the same can’t be said about the ending. It was as if the plot twists were replaced with loose ends, which is a shame when we consider how exceptional the series was, for the majority of its run!
