Phil Spencer and Xbox have come out swinging at Gamescom 2024.Indiana Jones and The Great Circleis one of the most anticipated games for the Microsoft console, releasing later this year on December 9.
The official release date announcement was also met with the confirmation of a PS5 version coming in Spring 2025, making the game a timed-console exclusive. With recent shake-ups in the games industry, has Spencer and co. admitted defeat?
From Xbox To PlayStation – Indiana Jones and The Great Circle
The Microsoft giant is hosting three live streams for each day of Gamescom 2024. For day one, Spencer and Sarah Bond were brought on to discuss some of the exciting announcements includingIndiana Jones.
When the PlayStation 5 announcement was brought into question, Spencer said:
Last Spring, we launched four games; two of them on the Switch [and] four of them on PlayStation. We said we’re gonna learn. We said we’d watch. I think at [Xbox] Games Showcase I might have said ‘from our learning, we’re gonna do more.’
To those unaware or who may have forgotten, the four games Spencer is referring to areHi-Fi Rush,Sea of Thieves,Grounded, andPentiment. PlayStation 5 versions were released for all four, while onlyGroundedandPentimentalso launched on Nintendo Switch.

Spencer closes his answer by discussing the overall health of the games industry. He talks about the fact that the industry is under a great deal of pressure and has been experiencing a lot of growth, but that a change is coming.
That’s gonna change. That’s gonna change for all of us. But the end result has to be better games that more people can play. If we’re not focused on that, I think we’re focused on the wrong thing.

It’s been a rough couple of console generations for Microsoft. While the company was on top during the 360 days, the introduction of the Xbox One and later the Series X|S has failed to capture audiences in the same fashion.
PlayStation continues to dominate the space with many console exclusives before porting them to PC. While Microsoft’s console does have some amazing and exciting games likeThe Great Circle, it won’t be the same.

Instead of playing catch up to Sony, why not utilize the massive PlayStation platform to sell Xbox games too? The strategy to migrate its biggest games to the competitor’s platform can work for Microsoft.
Although the company isn’t going full-on third-party, it is allocating resources to porting games onto PlayStation and Nintendo Switch consoles.
