The Crown of Wu, an action-adventure game inspired by the Chinese Journey to the West tale, willlaunch on March 24ththis year forPlayStation 5,PlayStation 4, andPCviaSteam. TheXbox Series X|SandXbox Oneversions will be released at a later date, as confirmed by publishers Gammera Nest, Meridiem Games, and developer Red Mountain.

Journey to the West - the 16th-century Chinese novel - tells the story of the Monkey King Sun Wukong, a mythical and powerful monkey who was imprisoned under a mountain by Buddha for rebelling against Heaven. After five hundred years, Sun Wukong is resurrected and makes a legendary pilgrimage to the West (India) to attain redemption and enlightenment.

The Crown of Wu resembles this premise of the monkey going from anti-hero to hero, but with a dystopian twist and futuristic elements that tell the story quite differently than any other Journey to the West-inspired game.

The game’s interpretation of the tale says that the Sun Wukong went on a rampage due to the influence of a certain crown, causing much chaos and suffering. When it awakens from its deep slumber, it will attempt to make amends and redeem itself just like the original story, but by retrieving the crown from the person who stole it while it was asleep.

Sun Wukong will once again embark on a quest to restore balance to the world, battling evil robots, mythical creatures, and solving intricate puzzles as it rediscovers the pain it has caused in the past and how to finally find true redemption.

Players can expect thrilling action with the use of the golden-banded staff, the Ruyi Jingu Bang. This weapon is the most recognizable for any Journey to the West-inspired game and is incredibly versatile, able to change size, extend, fly, and attack at the user’s command. The release date trailer also showcases Sun Wukong’s use of various abilities to defeat enemies and solve puzzles, modeled after the 72 unique powers it acquires in the original Chinese story.

The Crown of Wu will also be available in Europe as a Legend Edition, packaged in a specially designed box with exclusive artwork. The box will also include a set of beautiful art postcards and an introductory letter from the protagonist itself, the legendary Monkey King. A demo of the game is now available to try on PS5 and PC for those interested in seeing what the game has to offer.
