The Callisto Protocolis widely considered to be the spiritual successor to the Dead Space series. Players will find themselves trying to break out of the prison and escape the planet of Callisto in the middle of a massive infection, turning the population of prisoners and guards into monsters whose sole goal is to kill the remaining survivors.

The Callisto Protocol has a heavy focus on its melee combat, having you get up close and personal with the horrific creatures lurking through the prison. There is a bit of a learning curve to get this game’s systems figured out, and here are some tips and tricks to getting there quickly.

10Look For Blueprints

Encounters with enemies in The Callisto Protocol can be challenging, causing you to use the many tools at your disposal to get around your enemies. Through the main campaign, you’re given the stun baton, hand cannon, and shotgun, but you have multiple other weapons available if you take the time to find their blueprints.

Blueprints are hidden off the required path to get to the next area, rewarding players who are willing to explore. The best weapon, the assault rifle, is easily missed and only obtained by finding the blueprint. After finding a blueprint, head to the nearest 3-D printing station to make your new weapon.

9Focus On Upgrades, Not Consumables

Callisto Credits are not easily located around the world for you to stock up on. While some items can be sold for large amounts, the upgrades and cost of ammo are incredibly expensive, requiring players to choose how they spend their credits wisely, as you won’t be able to buy everything.

While you may occasionally run low on health and ammo, saving your credits and focusing them on upgrading your weapons is best. Consumables can be found around the world and will quickly be used, while upgrades will last you the rest of the game, offering a much better return on your spent credits.

8Take A Breath An Aim

Many encounters will have multiple creatures running straight at you, forcing you to react quickly. While it’s sometimes a natural response to quickly pull the trigger as a reaction, take a moment and make sure your shot is going to count so you won’t waste any more of your precious ammo.

Ammo is scarce, and depending on where you hit an enemy, it may not be a very effective hit, wasting a bullet. While taking a second to perfectly aim a shot may only increase your blood pressure as your enemy closes the distance, it will help ensure you make the most out of your limited resources.

7Inventory Management

At the beginning of the game, your inventory is incredibly limited. This inventory will quickly be filled with ammo, health, and rare items for you to sell for large amounts of credits. While you willget a considerable inventory boostthat will double the number of open slots you have, inventory management will also be at the center of this game.

Always be willing to backtrack to the most recent 3-D printing station to return and sell rare items. These rare items are only meant to be sold and should usually take priority over consumables since they cost more than double of the consumable. Also, always be sure to stack your ammo to the maximum capacity for a stack so that a few bullets don’t take up more than one slot.

6Prepare Your Assault Rifle

The assault rifle is the strongest weapon in the game. Even with just burst fire, it has an incredible fire rate that quickly adds up the total damage with strong bullets. The assault rifle also has a few powerful upgrades you should prioritize once you create this weapon.

Save all the bullets for this gun as you can, as after you get it, there will be a few more bosses through the game. These bosses are massive damage sponges that will take many bullets from other weapons. Saving your upgraded assault rifle for these bosses can quickly speed up these more difficult fights, including the final boss.

5Study And Use Your Environment

While it’s not something you can physically wield, the environment is just as much of a weapon for you to utilize. Being either spinning metal fans, spiked walls, or random boxes, everything in the world can be used to give you the upper hand in combat.

Using your GRP Glove, you may pick up and throw enemies into the environment to kill them immediately. Your melee weapon also has a decent amount of knockback when successfully combining an enemy, and if they are knocked back into a hazard, they will also quickly die.

4Heal When You Can

There are two ways to heal in Callisto Protocol, either the HP gel dropped from enemies or from syringes. HP gel is easily picked up and instantly heals you for a small amount of HP and is usually the only type of healing you can do while actively in combat.

The syringe will heal you for a much larger amount but will require you to crouch down and properly inject the syringe. As you complete the action, you’ll slowly heal. You are very vulnerable during this time, and should you get hit mid-animation, you won’t heal all the way, and the syringe will disappear. Knowing these things, be sure to use your syringes outside of combat whenever needed, as this will give you the best effect.

3Sometimes, Running Is The Best

Survival horror games tend to break the mold of how players usually handle a game. Even when you have ammo and health to handle a fight, it might not always be your best option. No matter how much you try to conserve, ammo will always be a problem if you fight every battle.

There is one situation in a forest-filled dome with massive spider-like creatures jumping from tree to tree, stalking you. While your first instinct is to fight, you’ll quickly use most of your bullets trying to kill this seemingly endless horde. While this is just one example, there are many situations where you might just rather run to save bullets for the next fight.

2Loot Everything

Resources will always be limited, and the clear loot laid out for you will never be enough to keep fighting off Callisto. Loot can be found all around, in cabinets, boxes, and even glass display cases.

After defeating an enemy, walk up to them and stomp on what’s left to knock free any loot to be picked up. Larger enemies, such as security robots, can also be looted to receive rare items as a reward that can be sold for a high amount of Callisto Credits. Exploring and looting can also lead you to find other weapon blueprints to unlock new guns to use.

1Melee Combat Is King

Callisto Protocol has a heavy focus on its melee combat. The unique dodging system is built around fighting a single enemy in melee and works incredibly well in 1v1 situations. The stun baton also has a wide range of powerful upgrades, helping it stay relevant even in the late game.

Some of the more powerful enemies in the game also take an incredible amount of damage from melee weapons. While ammo will always be scarce, an upgraded stun baton will never run low on ammo and shouldalways be your first choice in combat.
