The film was released in the United States on 2nd February 2024 but the initial reviews of the film have been a letdown. The director has worked on many popular films, particularly theKingsmanmovie series, but there is one franchise that Vaughn would love to be a part of:Star Wars. He explained the issue with the Star Wars franchise, which explains why Rian Johnson’s movie was met with criticism.

Director Matthew Vaughn recently appeared on theHappy Sad Confusedpodcast to talk about his latest movie,Argylle, and several other things. During the conversation, host Josh Horowitz asked him if he would ever do aStar Warsmovie. The director replied,

“For me, doing a Star Wars movie is to play with the characters that I loved, so, if they said to me we’ll reboot, do you want to reboot Star Wars? and actually have Luke Skywalker solo and Vader and you do your version of it – everyone would say you’re an idiot to try – but that would excite me.”

Since the release of 1977’sStar Wars, theStar Warsfranchise has remained one of the biggest movie franchises of all time. The sequels,The Empire Strikes Back(1980) andReturn of the Jedi(1983), further popularised the series around the world.

Fans got to know more about the Star Wars universe with the prequel and sequel trilogy, however, Vaughn believes that there’s a major flaw in the franchise now and how he would focus on it,

“Star Wars is the Skywalker family and that’s where I think they’ve gone wrong because they’ve forgot that – they’ve done brilliantly on the TV but it needs an epic new film and that’s what I would do.”

Director Rian Johnson’s 2017 movieThe Last Jedi, served as the second installment in the Star Wars sequel trilogy but many people, including actress Daisy Ridley, claimed that the film was very divisive.

What’s next for Matthew Vaughn?

It would be certainly exciting to see Matthew Vaughn’s take on theStar Warsfranchise but for now, the director is very occupied. Even before the release ofArgylle, the director confirmed that two sequels are in production. In the same interview, the director revealed his ideas of intertwining theArgyllemovie series with his popularKingsmanfranchise,

“We have an Argylle 2 planned so there is a universe – so we’ve got the kingsman on the right, I’d say, Argylle on the left and then we’ve got an idea for something in the middle as well – you’ve got these sort of competing franchises in a galaxy that one day might meet.”

In hindsight, expanding the franchise may seem like a bad idea to some people, particularly because ofArgylle‘s early reviews. Although Vaughn tried to “reinvent” the genre, itdidn’t sit well with some viewers, but the film was released on 2nd February 2024 so it still has more time to prove itself.
