Earlier this week, the official X (formerly Twitter) account ofNvidiaposted a handful of screenshots fromValve’s classic puzzle game,Portal. But these were no ordinary screenshots, as they were making use of a new AI generation tool within RTX Remix. While Nvidia believed fans would love this attempted glow-up, users all over the world quickly slandered the makeover, saying it looked “trash” and “awful.”

In the post, Nvidia was promoting a new RTX Remix tool known as Rest API. According to the company, this toolkit will enable modders to make use of thousands of generative AI models, generate new details in textures, and transform an entire game scene with a single text prompt.

A Single Cyberpunk 2077 Modder Is Working On An Impressive Multiplayer Mod

The mod has been in development since 2021 and is aiming to bring the equivalent of GTA Online to Cyberpunk 2077.

Nvidia’s post has now been viewed over two million times, with thousands of replies blasting the images. But this isn’t the first time the company has shown off the capabilities of this generative AI tool. Back in early June, a newblog poston the Nvidia website detailed exactly how the toolkit would work.

“For small mod teams with modders that lack art experience or time, generative AI can be a life saver,” Nvidia said. “It can help them remaster large swathes of a game’s textures in high resolution and with physically accurate materials that work in concert with RTX Remix’s full ray tracing, saving the modders time that they can spend hand crafting hero assets in impeccable quality.”

“Using ComfyUI, which is now accelerated by Tensor Cores on GeForce RTX and NVIDIA RTX GPUs, texture replacement is now significantly faster.”

Portal Fans Really Hate Nvidia’s Generative AI Makeover

But when Nvidia’s post started doing the rounds on social media, it was game over. “Hey, you see this game with impeccable art direction? what if it looked like shit instead?,” one user said in response to the Portal screenshots.

Other users simply said, “Looks like shit,” and, “Actually looks like total trash, wtf.”
