The cinematic world of Hollywood has long been dominated by legendary giants, from the iconic King Kong to the mighty Godzilla. But it seems like these giants might be losing their spot to a new challenger. Arising from the vast deserts of Arrakis, theDunesandworm towers everything and everyone in its path.

This further redefined the scale of cinematic monsters and has arguably unseated Godzilla as the ultimate alpha predator.
Timothée Chalamet Rides Sandworms Bigger Than Godzilla’s Historic Legacy
When theDune Part Onetrailer was released in 2020, it promised a mind-bending sci-fi adventure. However, beyond the presence ofTimothée Chalametand Jason Momoa, another element of the teaser captured everyone’s attention: the mighty, giant sandworms of Arrakis.
Adding to this, whenGQinterviewed Colin Groundwater, a devoted fan of theDuneuniverse, he shared all his knowledge about the sandworms. The host first explored the size of the sandworms. In response, Groundwater said,“Male sandworms tend to be larger. I want to say it’s something like ten times the size of a blue whale. Half a kilometer.”

Interestingly, known to the native Fremen as Shai-Hulud, these immense beasts are both revered and feared. They are integral to the planet’s environment and are crucial for the production of melange, commonly known as ‘the spice,’ which is a highly valued substance in the universe for its psychoactive properties and essential role in space travel.

Sandworms are enormous, with adult specimens reaching lengths of up to 450 meters (1,500 feet), and some even stretching to 1,000 meters (3,280 feet). The largest known sandworm, called the Old Man or Grandfather of the Desert, can grow to an astonishing 2.4 kilometers (1.5 miles).
These creatures are subterranean, traveling beneath the vast sands of Arrakis and emerging violently when they sense vibrations, making them asignificantthreat to spice harvesters.

The spice, which grants extended life and heightened awareness to those who consume it, is produced by the sandworm larvae. The Fremen, who have a deep spiritual connection with these creatures, have learned to ride them and use their knowledge to navigate and survive on the harsh desert planet.

These creatures have a unique physiology adapted to their desert environment. Their bodies are covered in metallic-like scales that protect them from sand and most weaponry. The only effective ways to kill a sandworm are through a nuclear strike or by poisoning their mouths with water.
Despite their massive size and formidable presence, the sandworms’ primary vulnerability is their sensitivity to water, which can cause them severe harm or death.

Godzilla Minus One: The Legendary Kaiju’s Origins, Powers, and Epic Destruction
On the other hand, Godzilla is a formidable creature with a rich and evolving backstory. In the most recent movieGodzilla Minus One, this creature is depicted as an ancient, amphibious sea monster that becomes a myth among the inhabitants of Odo Island, Japan.
After the U.S. nuclear tests in 1946, Godzilla is mutated by radiation into a Kaiju – a giant, destructive entity with a deep-seated rage against humanity.

Physically, Godzilla is a dinosaur-like creature with a distinctive appearance. He stands approximately50.1 meters tall (164 feet)and stretches over 100 meters in length (330 feet). His body is covered in scaly, armor-like skin, and he has a long, powerful tail and dorsal spikes that run down his back. Godzilla’s weight isaround 163,772 tons, making him an immense and intimidating force.
One of Godzilla’s most notable abilities is his atomic breath. This devastating attack is charged when his dorsal plates glow blue, culminating in a powerful beam of energy that can cause massive explosions, akin to nuclear blasts. While this ability is incredibly destructive, it also inflicts significant damage on Godzilla himself, requiring him to regenerate from injuries.
His regenerative capabilities are extraordinary, allowing him to heal rapidly from severe wounds and recover from near-total annihilation. Godzilla’s primary strength lies in his immense size and the sheer power of his atomic breath. Additionally, his accelerated healing factor makes him a nearly indestructible adversary.

Godzilla, despite his immense power and atomic breath, falls short when compared to the sandworm. While the King of Monsters wields incredible destructive abilities, he’s ultimately a terrestrial creature bound by limitations. In contrast, the sandworm is a subterranean titan, reigning supreme over the vast desert planet of Arrakis.
Its dominance is not just in its sheer size but in its integral role within its ecosystem, commanding both awe and fear.
