The lastStranger Thingsseason dropped almost two years ago with many things changing for the Hawkins crew. The show’s fourth season had multiple storylines, including the demon Vecna which became a pop cultural phenomenon. With shooting delayed due to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, filming for season 5 began in January.

Ross Duffer, who is one-half of the creators The Duffer Brothers, shared more behind-the-scenes images of the production. The current batch of images has many allusions to Jonathan and Nancy. One image, in particular, seems to be haunting as Jonathan and Nancy look back at something sinister from Steve Harrington’s car.

The ending of season 4 ofStranger Thingsshowed a new portal from the Upside Down opening in the middle of Hawkins. Despite destroying Vecna, the Hawkins crew could not stop the portal from making its way into Hawkins and dark times seemed to be ahead for the town. There were also some major character revelations in the series.

Jonathan Byers and Nancy Wheeler, who got together at the end of season 2 had a tumultuous relationship in season 4. The two were pursuing a long-distance relationship with hopes of finally getting together in college. However, Jonathan gets into a depressive state with d*ugs as he struggles to tell Nancy that he will be going to a Community College.

In the new images shared by Ross Duffer onInstagram, Jonathan and Nancy seemed to have teamed up again to defeat something sinister that attacked Hawkins. The two can be seen looking back in horror as they sit in the backseat of Steve Harrington’s car. While Duffer did not reveal what it was, speculations have been rife about what they might be.

The thread of images of season 5 ofStranger Thingshad more of Jonathan, with him, Nancy, and Steve Harington played by Charlie Heaton, Natalie Dyer, andJoe Keeryrespectively seen on set checking their monitor. The images also show an animatic of Jonathan screaming in a car as a raging fire burns behind him. The attention towards Jonathan has led fans to speculate that something sinister might happen to him in the show.

Season 5 Teases A Healed Jonathan And Nancy Relationship

The makers ofStranger Thingshave never shied away from killing off important characters that fans have grown to love, except the main crew of Hawkins. The show has killed off multiple beloved characters such as Joseph Quinn’s Eddie Munson and Sean Austin’s Bob Newby in the past and fans have feared for other main characters’ life in the show.

The new BTS images of Jonathan and Nancy from season 5 ofStranger Thingshave sparked wide speculation about the former’s death due to a lot of attention towards the character in the thread of images. Though the show has never let the main characters of the show die, there have been instances where they have come close.

However, fans also seem to be happy with more of the couple’s relationship being shown after the fourth season saw them drift apart. The show also hinted at Nancy and Steve Harrington’s relationship being in focus as Steve confesses his feelings. However, the multiple images of Jonathan back together seem to have given some relief to the fans.
