Having been acquired by Embracer Group earlier this year,Square Enix Montrealhas been renamed to Onoma, a Greek name that will “serve as an umbrella to multiple products, programs, and initiatives.” This name also marks a fresh start for the company, shaping its identities that empower creativity and innovation.
In ablog postdetailing how the rebranding process has occured, the company stated that they have refined their vision and developed a brand new identity that puts people before products. It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that the company would change its name given the fact that it is no longer owned by Square Enix. They have also outlined that this name means more than the community thinks, representing their goals and values set by the joint decision of the entire team.

“We have built the Onoma brand to be flexible to see us into the future, connect with multiple audiences, and not hinder us from expanding with the market.” the company said in the post. The studio also shed some light on what exactly ‘Onoma’ represents for their vision. “Onoma is Greek for name and names offer endless possibilities. Names breathe life into objects, persons, or concepts; bring them to the world - real or imagined. It is the start of a new experience, an invitation to go on a new journey.”
The studio supposedly tested a ton of names that “uses their values and brand pillars as guiding lights”, with the final one to be easy to pronounce in both English and French. Onoma Studio has also tasked a group of graphic designers with creating a brand book covering their logos, social media assets, letterhead, and communication templates. Further information about the new logo includes the elongated O reflects their visual identity.
The creators of some beloved games like Hitman GO and Life is Strange: Before the Storm, Square Enix Montreal, was acquired by Embracer Group along with Eidos Montreal and Crystal Dynamics in August. The studio will be developing new games under the brand of Onoma, representing a positive attitude towards players.
