I’ve read some crazy theories on the internet about the delay. Lunatic fans who think I finished writing four years earlier and was just sitting on the finished book to drive the price up. Or that I was just hiding it away. Clearly some people know nothing about publishing.
Thus, dismissing all these claims for good, the author made it clear that delays are a result of the creative process and the immense time and dedication needed to craft a book of such complexity. Unfortunately, I am 13 years late. Every time I say that, I’m [like], ‘How could I be 13 years late?’ I don’t know, it happens a day at a time. But that’s still a priority. A lot of people are already writing obituaries for me. [They’re saying] ‘Oh, he’ll never be finished.’ Maybe they’re right. I don’t know. I’m alive right now! I seem pretty vital!
Given Martin’s age and health, it has always been a fear among fans that the author might not make it before the final two books are released. WhileThe Winds of Winterso far has taken 13 years to be written and is still being written, if the author continues on this path he might well be in his 90s before the final installment,A Dream of Springis released.
