In the early 1990s, the world was taken over by the American drama series,Twin Peaks. Although fans loved David Lynch’s creative genius in the show, the creator wound up breaking a lot of hearts when he temporarily left the show in the second season.

As the co-creator, director, and creative force behind the show, his unique vision was a vital component of the show’s surreal and mysterious appeal. Fans feared that without him, their beloved cult classic would lose its soul. But the most poignant response came from Sherilyn Fenn, the actress who portrayed Audrey Horne, one of the most iconic and beloved characters from the series.

WhenDavid Lynchannounced his departure from theTwin Peaksseries in 1991, no one was looking forward to continuing the show without him. Like many fans, Sherilyn Fenn saw the creator as the heart and soul ofthe show, and her reaction captured the collective fear that the series would lose its unique essence if he wasn’t a part of it. In fact, in an interview withFlicks and The City, the now 59-year-old ended up revealing her reaction to finding out that he was leaving.
That was pretty devastating what happened on Easter morning. David called myself and other people other actors and said, ‘Well, I’m out.’I said, ‘What does that mean?’ And he said, ‘It means I’mout, I’m not doing it and they’re still gonna do it.’

Fenn continued,“And I said, ‘That’s ridiculous. There is no Twin Peaks without you. If you’re not doing it, I’m not doing it.'”Although the actress backed Lynch’s decision, she started plotting ways to get him back to the show.
The star explained that she and her co-star Mädchen Amick had come up with a plan to bring Lynch back. They had decided to shoot a video with the entire cast saying,“‘You know, Twin Peaks without David Lynch is like you fill in the blank.'”

Although the video might not have had a lot do to with it, Lynch ended up rejoining the show at the end of the second season. However, the 78-year-old revealed what had pushed him to leave just a few years ago.

The pilot is the only thing I am particularly, extremely proud of. There were great moments along the way. The second season sucked.

In another interview withThe New York Times, Lynch ended up stating,“It got very stupid and goofy in the second season; it got ridiculous. I stopped watching that show because it got so bad.”The creator was not the only one who felt that way, after all the second season has been dubbed the most skippable in the series.
The second season may have been a letdown to many, but Lynch taking back the reins ended up changing that. However, despite the creator’s excitement and enthusiasm, theTwin Peaksrevival in 2017 wound up being a little bit of a flop.
