Dwayne Johnson is currently promoting the sequel to his 2016 hit animated musical,Moana.Reprising his role as Maui,Moana 2sees him perform alongside Auliʻi Cravalho who returns as the titular character from the original. While the film received mixed reviews, it is projected to earn $115 million in its opening weekend which also has the Thanksgiving holidays.

Johnson is not done with Maui, however, as he will be seen as the live-action version in Disney’s adaptation of the original. Set to release in 2026, the film is currently in production and is reportedly filming in Atlanta and Hawaii. Leaked photos of Johnson’s look in the film indicate that he has bulked up for the role but he revealed his secret.

While the sequel is receiving mixed reviews, it has reportedly already broken a record by earning $13.8 million in the preview show on Tuesday, making it the biggest Tuesday night preview opening for Disney animation (viaVariety).

The film still has a long way to go with the five-day Thanksgiving weekend set to give the film a great edge.Deadlineeven projected that the film might net more than $100 million on the opening weekend. Johnson has more of Maui in his arsenal as he is set to reprise the role in Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation.
While the film only began shooting in July this year, photos of Johnson’s look reportedly surfaced revealing a more bulked-up Rock. However, the actor revealed that he had not increased his weight but had put on a bodysuit to appear as Maui. He said toExtraTV,

That is a couple of hours every day of transforming, putting that on. We shot outside and when those pictures surfaced, I was like, ‘Sh*t, we got caught, ’cause we were putting up, like, walls so there was no paparazzi. But they got into boats and started shooting pictures. So, but I’m happy you liked it. I can’t wait.
He also mentioned that it took a long time to put the suit on and was happy that people believed he had bulked up for the role.

In theMoanafilms, Maui is a demigod who accompanies Moana on her journey across the ocean. He is a shapeshifter who is constantly annoyed but is also a loudmouth and has plenty of one-liners to make him endearing. Dwayne Johnson has often mentioned that he based the character of Maui on his grandfather.

While he has voiced the role in two films now, portraying Maui in live-action reportedly affected Johnson differently. As the production was filmed in Hawaii, Johnson mentioned that he realized how real it felt when he went into the sets (via ExtraTV),
The moment I stepped on set, Terri, as live-action Maui, I realized right away, ‘Oh, wow, this is different,’ in terms of this is real flesh-and-blood and skin-and-bones. It becomes real all of a sudden. It was almost like getting in my grandfather’s skin and what that was like.

He also mentioned that he related to Maui and felt that he too was a joyous person who would find happiness in every corner.
Moana 2is currently playing in cinemas.
