Starring Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock,The Proposalwas released all the way back in 2009 and is considered an absolute classic when it comes to rom-coms. While critics may not have been too kind to the film, it has remained a fan-favorite throughout the years. After all, there is nothing better than curling up in a cozy blanket and watching comfort films all night long, is there?

What makes rom-coms so lovable are the awkward yet adorable scenes between the female and male characters. Sure, they might be a bit cheesy but hey, who’s complaining? One of the best examples of this isThe Proposal’s shower scene where Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds bump into each other buck naked. Years after the release, the actress opened up about what it took for her to say yes to getting “naked” in the film.

The only thing more awkward about shooting a nude-ish scene with your co-star is having to shoot one with someone you have known since childhood. ForSandra Bullock, that someone wasRyan Reynoldswho she has known since their prepubescent scenes.

In the scene, Margaret (Bullock) comes out of the shower naked in search of a towel but instead finds herself an equally naked Andrew (Reynolds), and the two bump into each other. What follows is a hilarious scene where the two characters try their best to hide themselves from each other which clearly didn’t work out.

Sandra Bullock: ‘I assumed he was a homophobic chauvinist’ on 1 Partner That Became the Biggest Mistake of Her Life

Bullock was fine with going “naked” for the camera but she did have one condition – she wanted it to be funny and humiliating for her character. During her appearance on theAbout Last Nightpodcast back in December 2021, she stated,

Ryan and I have known each other since we were prepubescent. We go way, way, way back…I was like, ‘I will do this naked scene only if I can be humiliated and funny’. You will not see me trying to attempt being sexy naked—in real life or onscreen. There’s just no point in it! It was for that reason, with a friend that you trusted comedically, and safety-wise I knew I was in the presence of safety.

While Bullock draws a line at being naked on screen, she was okay to go for it inthe$317 millionmovie due to the director,Anne Fletcher, agreeing to her condition and her feeling safe with Reynolds.

What Happened After the Director Yelled ‘Cut!’?

Actors go to lengths to film an intimate scene and make it believable. In Bullock and Reynolds’ case, everything that had to be covered was covered and neither the actor saw anything nor did the actress. The set was also closed off and only the necessary people were present.

On the podcast, she stated that there were“flesh-colored things”stuck on her and her hair was strategically placed. However, true trouble began when Fletcher called out“Cut!”and the two had to separate from each other.

The only problem was that they couldn’t really bring themselves to move away as they tried to keep their eyes off the other. Bullock recalled how Fletcher’s words drew everyone’s attention to Reynolds’ private parts and all she could do was try her best not to look down, despite the instincts.

I hear Anne Fletcher from the darkness go, ‘Ryan, we can see your bll sck!’ I’m like, ‘Oh God!’ because you wanna look down, but I’m like, ‘Don’t look down. Don’t look down.’ Everyone in the darkness spun around to see if they could find a monitor. I was like, ‘Anne, there’s a way to present that information.’

ThePractical Magicactress applauded Reynolds for his professional demeanor and couldn’t-care-less attitude.

But in friendship, you just didn’t care; it wasn’t my business to look, it’s just there, and then Anne just bringing everyone’s focus to that area. Ryan was just so cool. Unflappable. He is absolutely unflappable.

There’s nothing better than a good behind-the-scenes story that makes us double over with laughter!
