Rupert Grint joined theHarry Potterfranchise when he was just 11 and went on to play the character of Ron Weasley until he was 22. The franchise was a lucrative deal for the actor with its huge payouts. He continued to receive residuals from TV and DVD sales even after the franchise ended. However, he has currently landed in hot water for a tax mishap that happened right after hisHarry Potterdays.

Grint’s $2.3 million tax bill should come as no surprise when you consider the tax debts of actors like Wesley Snipes and Chris Tucker. Snipes spent 28 months in federal prison for tax evasion charges, while Tucker owed the IRS nearly $12 million in tax debt.
Rupert Grint’s Tax Debt Is Nothing Compared To Wesley Snipes and Chris Tucker’s Huge Tax Debts
Rupert Grintis the latest actor to suffer the brunt of poor tax management. He is set to face a $2.3 million tax bill after a judge found that he evaded tax in the year 2011-12. However, the amount seems like peanuts when compared to what Wesley Snipes and Chris Tucker owed the IRS.

Wesley Snipesowed a total of $7 million in tax debts. He was convicted on misdemeanor charges of wilful failure to file federal income tax returns (via FindLaw). He was sentenced to three years in federal prison and he served 28 months before being released in April 2013. The indictment noted that Snipes failed to file tax returns from 1999 to 2004, during which he gained worldwide attention for hisBladefilms.
Snipes also faced a conspiracy charge after it was alleged that Snipes filed false returns for 1996 and 1997, including false tax refund claims of over $11.3 million. The government alleged that Snipes, alongside Eddie Ray Khan and Douglas P. Rosile, attempted to obtain tax refunds using a tax protestor theory called the 861 argument.

It was not just Snipes that amassed such a huge tax debt. In aNetflixspecial,Chris Tuckerjoked that he had received tax advice from Snipes. He was probably taking a shot at himself, as he oftencame at loggerheads with the IRS. In 2014, he settled a $2.5 million tax debt, which he attributed to his“poor accounting and business management”(via CNN).
In November 2021, the IRS claimed that the actor still owed them $9.6 million in back taxes (via USA Today). The IRS has placed a lien on theRush Hourstar’s property in Henderson, Nevada. Kevin Hart once joked about how Tucker had random advice when he moved next door,“Pay your taxes, man”(via @SoulPlanett/YouTube).

In October 2023, Tucker reached a settlement with the IRS, agreeing that he would pay $3.58 million in back taxes (via Rolling Stone).
Rupert Grint Faces A $2.3 Million Tax Bill In The U.K.
Rupert Grint didn’t just earn paychecks for his role as Ron Weasley in theHarry Potterfranchise. Asone of the three main castsin the films, he was entitled to residual payments from TV and DVD sales over the years. The actor’s business affairs were managed by his late father Nigel Grant. His father set up the company Clay 10 Limited and became its director while making the actor its sole shareholder (via Accountancy Daily).

The actor transferred his acting rights and goodwill attached to his name to Clay 10. In the tax year 2011-12, a total of $10.9 million was moved to the company and was deemed a capital gain. According to the tax laws in the U.K. at the time, the capital gains tax rate was just 28 percent as opposed to the 50 percent income tax rate.
Grint also received a special entrepreneur’s relief clause which reduced the rate to 10% for the first $12,687,000. However, this fell under the scrutiny of His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC), which opened an inquiry in January 2014. HMRC maintained in court that the capital sum should be treated as income.

A tribunal judge rejected the appeal of the actor and he’s looking to pay nearly $2.3 million in tax bills. Tax expert Dan Neidle took toXto note that Grint was just 23 at the time and wasn’t probably aware of what was going on.
