While April Fools' Day is generally known for its outlandish pranks and tricks, not all announcements are fake ones. That at least seems to be the case for fans ofthe cult classic roguelikeÂRogue Legacy, with a sequel now seemingly on the way.DeveloperCellar Door Games seemed to confirm on TwitterthatRogue Legacy 2is in development, and that an official announcement for the game is on the way for later today. While there isn’t much to go off right now other than a teaser image, it’s still an exciting prospect for fans. Or it could be the cruelest April Fools' joke possible, but hopefully that isn’t the case.
The originalÂRogue Legacyfirst released on PC in 2013 and quickly became a critical and commercial success, and was one of the first games to help drive the popularity of roguelikes in the following years. Aside from its challenging gameplay and randomly-generated dungeons, the most notable element of the game was how players would take on the role of one of three randomly-generated offspring if their character ended up getting killed. Each of these offspring would then have their own unique traits and abilities, helping players to get further and further into the dungeon to defeat the final boss.
After the release ofÂRogue Legacy, developer Cellar Door Games released their follow-up title, the action-adventure gameÂFull Metal Furies, on Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. While the game reviewed fairly well,ÂFull Metal Furiesended up being a major commercial disappointment for the studio.
Given the love and admiration ofÂRogue Legacy, it makes sense that the studio would want to return to the franchise for another installment. While we can expect to see the official reveal (and hopefully a trailer) later today, it will be interesting to see how Cellar Door Games builds off the elements that madeÂRogue LegacyÂsuch a wild success.
