While Simon Helberg’s career has been mostly dictated by his portrayal of Howard Wolowitz, the actor’s expertise transcends beyond the realm of acting. Helberg, who attained a blackbelt in karate at the age of 9, is also pretty fluent in playing piano, which later came in handy during his stint in Meryl Streep’sFlorence Foster Jenkins.
Although Helberg was pretty well-versed with piano since his childhood, for the film, he had to adjust to a new style to do Cosmé McMoon’s depiction justice in the critically acclaimed musical.
Simon Helberg Drew a Correlation Between Music and Acting
Before turning to acting,Simon Helbergspent his teenage years playing piano, which came in handy during his transition to the realm of comedy. Elaborating on their link, the actor added that rhythm serves a crucial purpose in both music and acting, especially in the comedy landscape,adding“There’s probably something more physiological going on”.
I certainly think obviously rhythm is a huge part of being an actor. It just is unconscious to a degree but particularly in comedy rhythm is pretty essential and there’s probably something more physiological going on. I have a good ear for music and voices and dialects and I’m sure that in some way it plays into everything that I do.
But despite being pretty proficient at playing piano, his experience in theMeryl Streep-led musical wasn’t easy, as it needed him to delve into some new territories.

Speaking about his experience in director Stephen Frears’Florence Foster Jenkins, which shed light on Helberg’s excellence at playing piano, the actor recalled that he was kind of pushed into lying at the beginning. He recounted telling the director,“Sure, I can do anything you throw in front of me”.

But consideringThe Big Bang Theorystarhad mostly served in rock and jazz bands during his teenage years, classical opera was a whole new ball game for him. In another interview, herecalled:
I played in lots of rock and jazz bands. That’s what I thought I was going to do. Then I started acting. I’d never played classical and certainly not opera. Playing accompaniment is a whole other art form. And playing with Meryl Streep was something I don’t think anyone can really prepare for.
But as the story goes, not only did he overcome his fear of performing opposite to one of the biggest Hollywood icons of all time, but Helberg also excelled at bringing Cosmé McMoon’s brilliance to the silver screen.
