While it didn’t exactly come as a shock thanks to a myriad of leaks, earlier today Respawn Entertainment unveiled their brand new battle-royale gameApex Legends,which is set in theTitanfalluniverse. One thing that’s distinctly lacking from the game, however, was the titans themselves. Now, Respawn has gone on record, explaining why they removed the unique mech-aspect from the game.
In an interview with Eurogamer, Lead Producer ofApex Legends,Drew McCoy, explained that the team tinkered with the idea of including the mech’s as a power-up but settled on the idea that, because they were essentially a “power fantasy” they didn’t really fit with the balance that a battle royale match is supposed to have.
If you just thought to yourself “well, why don’t you just nerf the titans,” McCoy said that the team felt like if you power down the titans, which are supposed to be seen as powerful figures, then what’s the point of having them at all.
McCoy also compared battle royale modes to Poker, saying that everyone is supposed to “come to the table with the same possibilities,” implying that titans would go against that thought process. Interesting enough, the game includes hero abilities and restrictions on who can use them, so this seems a bit…hypocritical to a certain degree.
For those that don’t know,Apex Legendsis a battle royale mode set in the same universe as the aforementioned mech-series that drops 60 players into a small world to see who can come out on top. During their time in the game, players have the ability to find loot, revive squadmates, and more to make their way to first place.

Apex Legendsis available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows PC, and is free-to-play. Of course, players can purchase cosmetic microtransactions to enhance their experience, but there’s nothing stopping you from experience all of the game’s content in its entirety.
