Magic is a common concept used in lots of anime. From sorcery inJujutsu Kaisento grimoires inBlack Clover, no two anime present magic in quite the same way.Fairy Tailis one of the most popular magic anime ever, and it sports an idea of spellcasting that is limitless. Generally, magic in Fairy Tail is categorized in one of two ways: caster type or holder type.

The difference is where the effect of the spell or power comes from. Caster type magic originates from the wizards themselves (a very Harry Potter-esque concept), while Holder type magic comes from items or objects that have magic imbued in them. However, outside that grouping, anything goes. Some Fairy Tail seems to have rather conventional elemental effects, while others are much more unique. Here are some of the very best types of magic in the series.

10Celestial Spirit Magic

Celestial spirits are magical beings from a separate world that can be summoned to help the mage or wizard. Though only a few are seen in the anime, it can be implied that there are as many spirits as stars in the sky, and the only stipulation needed to summon them is having their key. Of course, most mages are only able to summon one at a time, and since each spirit is their own person, they have their own schedules that dictate when they’ll want to be summoned. It’s a magic with a few rules, and it’s rather niche and unpredictable, but it’s certainly well worth it.

9Word/Script Magic

Script magic is the power of words, and probably the most accessible type of magic in Fairy Tail. Anyone with a capacity for magic and knowledge of written language is capable of using word magic. Wizards who specialize in this type of magic generally study many languages in order to make their scripts more complex and harder to counter. Word magic is used to make traps, create effects that reflect the meaning of the word, or simply leave messages. It’s a relatively simple magic, but its accessibility and ease of use gives it ninth place.

8Requip Magic

Requip magic allows mages and wizards to swap out items they’ve stored in a pocket dimension. For magical knights, adventurers, and soldiers, that usually means changing weapons to adjust for the dynamic situation on the battlefield. However, it’s also a magic used by many civilians as well, for things as simple as changing clothes. It’s certainly a magic with great utility, but it requires a lot of preparation to store everything that may be needed in the first place.

Though it may not seem like much, Fairy Tail has shown how requipping can be used to its full potential, and how powerful adapting to any situation can be. It comes in eighth place for its general usage, but also its high-end application.

7Molding Magic

Magic can have nearly any attribute, ranging from elements like ice and fire to concepts like memory or sagacity. Molding magic is the dreamer’s choice of application, since it allows the wizard to create anything they can imagine out of their chosen element. The limit of what can be made is determined by a mage’s creativity and their overall magic power. Ice can become weapons or tools, Water can become blood, and there are a huge range of other potential applications besides. Molding magic is versatile and unique to each user, but it also requires a lot of magical ability to get the best from it. Ultimately, it’s only as potent as its user is.

6Take Over Magic

Using an opponent’s power against them is a classic strategy, and Take Over magic does that spectacularly. Not in a traditional sense, though. This magic allows the wizard to assume the form of, and use the powers and skills of, those they truly know and understand. This usually happens with monsters, beasts, and demons. Doing this, the wizard can increase their strength many times over, and potentially receive access to other magic they’d usually never use. It’s definitely one of the most difficult of the common magic types to pull off, though, and targets must be chosen carefully to get the best from it.

5Heavenly Body Magic

Very few characters in the anime use Heavenly Body magic. Similar to Celestial Spirit magic, it’s based on stars and constellations, but instead of summoning the embodiment of those things, this magic literally uses stars to attack the enemy.

Generally, it’s the energy of a star in the form of beams of light doing the work, but the strongest forms of Heavenly Body magic call down actual meteors from space. The destructive power is no joke, but because of its rarity, Heavenly Body magic doesn’t really get a chance to shine very often in Fairy Tail.

4Black Arts

In Fairy Tail, black magic has the power over life and death, and the Black Arts are known to bring calamity to the world. The only character known to consistently use this type of magic is main antagonist Zeref, but others have wielded it once or twice. While it has variable uses, Zeref had used it mainly to create many powerful demons that caused chaos across the world. During the course of his experiments with this deadly force, he was afflicted with the Curse of Contradiction, which killed those he cared about. It’s certainly a formidable magic, perhaps the very strongest, but the risks involved in trying to control it ultimately aren’t worth it.Questions of morality, always rife in anime, are at the venter of its use.

3Enchantment Magic

Enchantment magic is used to add extra properties to other objects or people, and primarily used to buff teammates. With Fairy Tail’s lack of limits, a mage can enchant just about anything they want with or onto anything that exists. Run-of-the-mill stat buffs are available, and often very useful, but there’s so much more this magic can do. Enchant a personality onto a sword? No problem. Shuffle an entire continent? If you can handle it. There are only three characters known for using Enchantment in the anime, but it’s implied anyone can learn it. For allowing the user to change reality, and the fact that there are barely any limits, this is some of the most potentially potent magic in Fairy Tail. The wielder needs to be capable of whatever they’re intending to do, however.

2Time Magic

Time magic is overpowered in any form of media. Reversing time, freezing time, and creating a space between time are all things that have happened in Fairy Tail. Any amount of control over time is almost a guaranteed slingshot into the upper ranks of wizard society. Unfortunately, the power of time is considered a “lost” magic, so is generally what you’d call available. It’d also be good to note that really great time magic requires a certain amount of sacrifice, like being possessed by a deity or shortening your own life. It’s as limited as it is powerful. Only one type of magic can really beat this one.

1Dragon/God/Devil Slayer Magic

Slayer magic is the single most important type of magic in the series. Despite being called Fairy Tail, the series actually revolves more around the power of dragons than anything else. There are, of course multiple types of Slayers, like Devil Slayers, but it’s Dragon Slayers that take the spotlight. Generally, Slayers are able to use the power and magic of the being they’re meant to slay, but often enough these wizards transcend their original power to gain even greater strength. In the end it’s always the Dragon Slayer, wielder of the most formidable magic, who saves the day.
