Undertaleis one of themost successful indie gamesof all time. It was a fond time in video game history when this whimsical game first hit Steam. From there, it soon became an experience that so many of us would never forget. Taking inspiration from classics like theMotherseries andMario & Luigi, Undertale tells a memorable, emotional story, tackling themes of identity and adventure.

Over time, Undertale has transformed into its own unique work of art. It eatures characters that have quickly become fan favorites, and the game’s charming figures are the stars of the show. With their emotional development and quirky dialogue, we can’t help but adore them. While they’re all unique in their own ways, there are several that will always simply be the best.
10Monster Kid
Being a huge superfan of Undyne’s, this precious monster showcases the innocent side of Undertale. You never learn their name, only knowing them throughout the title as Monster Kid. A curious little enigma, Monster Kid is a forceful personality as they make it through the game’s different areas.
The only downside of this fascinating being, as great as they are, is how little you get to see them. With every encounter that you have with them, you yearn to learn more about them. They aren’t exactly the most cryptic, but their energetic nature and pure enthusiasm for the possibility of meeting Undyne makes them endlessly endearing. With a little more character development, you could have got some much-needed answers about who Monster Kid really is.

Flowey is the first major character that you meet in Undertale. He greets you with a huge smile on his face that gives you a sense of comfort, but there’s an inexplicable edge to him too. It’s immediately clear that, below the surface, there’s a lot more of a sinister personality lying within him.
He’s the first impression that you get of Undertale, yet is also the character that makes you not want to trust anyone. Based on his power to mimic the faces or voices of others, Flowey is a deceitful character. Tricking you with his fake friendly persona, he portrays the darker side of this mysterious land that you’ve fallen into.

8Asgore Dreemurr
As you meet him near the end of Undertale, it’s hard not to feel bad for Asgore Dreemurr when you finally take a moment to get to know him. He’s the ruler of the Underground who strives to protect his denizens from anything that might harm them. At his core, Asgore doesn’t want to be considered evil. However, at the same time, he knows that he must do anything to protect his loved ones.
If you decide to take the Neutral or Pacifist route, Asgore eventually grows fond of you in the end. However, with the Genocide route, there’s no chance you’ll get on his good side. Asgore’s fate is heavily tied into the player’s chosen path.

7Napstablook
This melancholic ghost is oddly charming. Only having the desire to lay on their floor and listen to spooky tunes, Napstablook is always hard on themselves. No matter how much you try to cheer them up, their tears will always come back.

You find Napstablook in The Ruins, where they serve as the first miniboss. However, it’s clear from the fight alone that they don’t wish to hurt you. When you encounter them again later on, they invite you into their house tolisten to their music (not a hardship in a title with a soundtrack as fantastic as this)with them. You don’t know too much about Napstablook, but the theory that they’re connected to Mettaton is enough to keep you intrigued.
Alphys is such a precious character that you’ll want to give her a big hug from the second you meet her. It’s possibly because of her meek and nerdy nature that you’re able to’t help but find her so lovable. On the other hand, it could also be because she’s your ultimate guide through the Underground.

Living in the lab found in western Hotland, Alphys is a royal scientist who is extremely shy. She’s self-deprecating in a lot of ways, devaluing her elite skills and doubting her intelligence. Due to how swiftly she wins over our hearts, every phone call she makes to you reminds you that she’s truly a treasure. If only she appreciated herself as much as her fans do.
Leading the Royal Guard, Undyne will only warm up to you if you prove that you can be trusted. If you’ve broken down her tough wall, however, she’ll reveal herself as one of the sweetest figures you’ll ever know in Undertale.

During your first meeting with Undyne, she doesn’t reveal her true gentle nature. Throughout the first time in Waterfall, she’ll constantly follow the player until she eventually decides to engage in combat. Her boss fight is strange, as she assumes the player is much more of a threat than they actually are. On finally beating her, however, she’ll begin to respect the protagonist and will be a dedicated friend.
This fabulous robot, built by Alphys, gives players the glamorous entertainment that they didn’t know they needed. Initially, it’s assumed that Mettaton is a bloodthirsty robot who was once a machine built for entertainment. However, the more you encounter him, the more you see that he’s far from being a killer.
The situations Mettaton puts you in are some of the most charming moments in the game, such as the time he pretends to be the host of a cooking show. His cutscenes will bring a huge smile to your face. All in all, he shows endless care to his creator, Alphys, and is adored by the fanbase in return.
In a world that you’re frightened to venture through in the beginning, Sans serves as the comedic relief that is sorely needed. He seems like a teddy bear-esque figure on the surface. While this is true, he also has a very sarcastic side, which he indulges at every possible opportunity.

Getting on Sans' good side isn’t hard, as he warms up to you from the second he shakes your hand. If you decide to cross him at any point, however, be prepared to face his vengeance and a surprising amount of wrath. He’s very different to his brother, Papyrus, being lazy and witty with a mischievous nature that he only conveys to those he likes.
Toriel is not only a mother figure in Undertale, but also one of the greatest motherly figures in an indie game. She serves as the overall caretaker of the Ruins, saving you from Flowey’s deadly grasp in the beginning. Guiding you through the Ruins until she feels as though you’re ready to leave on your own, you quickly grow attached to her.
Caring for children and having been excited to become a mother one day, Toriel protects you when you were at your weakest point. She also has a playful side that makes her laughter and jokes infectious, which makes leaving her in the beginning even harder.
What makes Papyrus the greatest character in the entirety of Undertale? Just how well he represents the charming heart of the game. Referring to himself as “The Great Papyrus,” he is an aspiring Royal Guard who hopes to capture a human one day. You’re his ticket in.
At first, his goals might seem intimidating, since he stops at nothing to attempt to capture you. It’s truly all in good fun though, as he quickly grows to love you with his entire skeletal being. He believes in others just as much as he believes in himself, cementing the core idea of determination that’s represented throughoutUndertale’s stunning yet macabre adventure.
