Ultrakillis a true revitalization of the FPS genre, taking a step back in time but adding its own style to the mix too. With unique mechanics, dynamic weapon loadout options and fast-paced and frantic movement-based combat, it’s a stylish and dramatic ride. Its boss battles, in particular, are sights to behold.

In FPS titles, bosses are sometimes simple bullet sponges. With Ultrakill’s mobility, though, it’s able to design showdowns that stand as highlights of the game, some of which subvert the player’s expectations in the most unusual ways. This list will rank all of those bosses to see which comes out on top.

10Leviathan

While every boss in Ultrakill is still an event, some are definitely weaker than others in either gameplay or overall atmosphere, and Leviathan stands a little lacking in both. It is the boss of the flooded Wrath layer, a massive sea serpent formed from the sunken corpses of lost souls, now wrecking havoc on the ocean.

For all the build up, Leviathan feels a little lacking in comparison to other bosses, as its distant nature doesn’t lend itself to the combo-heavy style of the action. It also lacks a true story presence. The encounter does have its merits, though: The tension is built through brief glimpses of the beast prior to the battle, and the fight makes great use of the Whiplash to allow you to ride the Leviathan and deal massive damage.

9Flesh Panopticon

Sometimes, a boss isn’t intended to be a challenge. Instead, it stands as more of a dramatic setpiece. The Flesh Panopticon is the first boss of P-2, an upgraded version of the Flesh Prison made to contain Sisyphus and his followers. This one, however, proved to be a failure against the powerful soul.

The Flesh Panopticon,a Roblox-horror-esquemonstrosity, is hard to judge compared to other bosses, since it’s far from a traditional battle. It’s simply an encounter the player must survive for a moment before the actual boss fight begins. Despite this, it still makes its mark through an incredible atmosphere, serving as the perfect prelude to the true boss and making it all the more intimidating.

8Corpse Of King Minos

The Corpse of King Minos is the boss of the Lust layer. He is the original king who tried to make peace only to be struck down, with his corpse creating a massive husk that now wanders the layer.

The actual fight with Minos is quite similar to the one against Leviathan, with the opponent being mostly stationary and forcing you to dodge a barrage of attacks. Minos varies his assault much more, though, and what truly makes the boss stand out is the sheer spectacle. Throughout the entire layer, you see Minos in the distance, slowly realizing the sheer scale of him as you approach.

V2 is the boss of the Limbo layer, an upgraded model of the protagonist with all the same abilities and weapons (and some extra smugness). It serves as an excellent challenge, boasting a unique style of fighting that will punish you for not paying attention. Capable of adapting its strategy to the player’s behavior, it will be an unpredictable thorn in your side. You’ll have to learn its behavior and habits to prevail, and there are few enemies as frightening as an augmented version of the player themselves.

6Flesh Prison

Bosses all have their own ways of being challenging. Some force you to understand complex strategies and others, like the Flesh Prison, rely on overwhelming the player. Flesh Prison is the first boss of P-1, a being of demonic and angelic energy made to contain King Minos’ soul and prevent it from escaping the sanctum.

Flesh Prison launches barrages of homing projectiles, black holes that drop you to 1 HP, and orbital lasers, all while using its minions to heal any damage taken. The challenge of taking down Flesh Prison is managing all these elements and being clinical among the chaos, targeting the eyes first while navigating the barrage. It’s an intense fight that sets the stage perfectly for the true boss.

Ultrakill The Corpse of King Minos boss battle

Gabriel is the boss of Gluttony, a prideful angel who wishes to stop your rampage and restore order. While Ultrakill isn’t without a story, it’s kept very minimal, so to hear an actual voice this deep into the game is an utter shock.

Gabriel is one of the game’s biggest difficulty spikes outside of the Prime Sanctums, sporting powerful attacks and deceptive movements that can make it difficult to keep up with them. Gabriel feels like a duel against an insurmountable force, which makes it feel so good to take them down and later destroy them when you’re more skilled.

4V2 Rematch

V2 is fought again at the end of the Greed layer, sporting a new arm and more weapons to get revenge against you for their first loss.

The fight cranks up the mirror match idea to the max, as V2 has obtained more of your weapons and uses more techniques against you, even shooting your own coins in the air. Just as they can counter you, though, you can counter them right back with magnets and your own coins. You have to prove you understand the depths of the game’s combat to win. The fight ends on an incredible note, too, with the player kicking V2 off the pyramid and claiming the Whiplash.

3Gabriel Rematch

You fight Gabriel again at the end of the Heresy layer. The angel is now consumed by rage, as he’s been put on a deadline to kill you. While it is mostly more of the same gameplay wise, what makes Gabriel’s second fight stand so strong is the story told through it. Gabriel’s pride has been completely shattered, and he has developed a more personal grudge against you.

Through this fight, that breaks down; the rage is washed away as Gabriel begins to enjoy having a true challenge. They find new purpose and identity through the loss. Everything from the voice lines to the music helps to tell this story.

2Minos Prime

The hardest challenges within Ultrakill don’t lie in the main story, but instead in the Prime Sanctums (levels unlocked by performing perfectly in every other level). Minos Prime is the true boss of P-1, the soul of King Minos now freed from his prison and wanting to take revenge on you for the destruction of humanity.

Minos provides an imposing battle, with incredibly quick combos that you can only react to by listening to his voice lines. You’ll be dealing with dive kicks and enormous explosions, able to kill you in seconds if you stop moving or let your guard down. The fight becomes a game of chess, where you must constantly counter his moves with your own and try to whittle away at him. Combine that withthe incredible musicand sheer emotion of Minos’ character and you have a boss only topped by one other.

1Sisyphus Prime

Sisyphus Prime is the true boss of the gauntlet that is P-2, being the prime soul of King Sisyphus, king of Greed. Sisyphus takes everything that Minos had and cranks it up to eleven, upgrading his moves to ask for even greater reaction speed and better movement from the player. Sisyphus is far more aggressive, too, not allowing you to counter him unless you take risks.

On his second phase, he won’t pause for even a second, meaning you’ll have to weather a storm of blows to get a refill of blood and chip him down. Where Minos was a game of chess, slow enough to be thoughtful, Sisyphus is more of a frantic dance. You’ll narrowly dodge his attacks while only occasionally swinging for a hit of your own. When all of that is combined with the emotive vocal performance, powerful music, and the overarching story of finding meaning in struggle regardless of the outcome, Sisyphus easily takes the crown as the best boss within Ultrakill. Toppling him might just beone of the trickiest experiences you’ll have in an FPS.
