2024 seems to be shaping up as quite the year for animation. WithInside Out 2andThe Wild Robotsweeping the box office and critics’ opinions, respectively, there seems to be a lot of competition in the animation department for 2024. Even films likeDespicable Me 2, fell short of a billion dollars at the box office by just a few million, which really indicates what a great year it has been for animation. There are films currently in theatres likeTransformers Onethat have also managed to garner a lot of support from the fandom.
However, it seems that the year is still not done with what it has to offer for animation, given that there could be another contender for the best-animated film of 2024 come November. Coming from Latvia, which animation supplied from France and Belgium as well,Flow, Gints Zibalodis, might be the animated film that takes onThe Wild Robotand then some, given its unique story, and the rave reviews that it has already received from critics.
Flowis different from other animated animal films
While there might be a slew of films that have an all-animal cast, Flow is markedly different than the likes ofRango,Zootopia, andSing—having a lot more in common withWall. E, the film does not have any dialogue to speak of. It simply follows a cat, on a boat with a few other animals of different species, in the wake of a deluge that seems to be worldwide. These animals navigate the vast ocean and the terrors therein in a quest to find dry land.
Transformers One Review — The Best Transformers Ever!
The film might remind some viewers ofThe Wild Robot, a similar animal-centric film, that had the star-studded cast of Lupita N’yongo, Pedro Pascal, and Catherine O’Hara. The film, completely devoid of dialogue, has been praised for its creative and picturesque visuals, with a heartfelt story that has been compared to Bambi. The film might as well rival the finesse that The Wild Robot exhibits with its story, if not exceed it, with what it has to offer as its visual style and narrative.
Flowwill be Latvia’s official entry into the Academy Awards for Best International Feature
Flow, with its unique premise, breathtaking art style, and silky smooth and buttery animation, is going to compete in the category of Best Foreign Feature at the 97th Academy Awards. The film will compete with a slew of other films, such asThe Glassworkerfrom Pakistan, which seems to be the only other animation film from around the world to work its way into the list.
The Wild Robot Review — A Gorgeous Animated Family Film!
With animation garnering a foothold around the world, it has become more likely that certain film industries would gain international recognition, as could probably be the case withFlow. The film’s unique look could definitely draw the attention of audiences once it receives a wider release. While the chances of the film earning a lot might seem slim, it must be noted thatWall. E, with similarly little dialogue, was able to bring in the big bucks for Pixar.
