While Mayim Bialik’s big claim to fame was her pivotal role inThe Big Bang Theory, the star was already an experienced campaigner in Hollywood at a young age. Bialik starred in the 1990 sitcomBlossom, as a spunky and intelligent teenager who navigates the various challenges in her life. While the show saw success and made the star a recognizable face, Bialik’s experience outside the set was a challenging one.
TheJeopardy!host revealed the painful times she faced when reading brutal comments about her appearance in the show. As a young actor navigating problems like any other girl, these opinions about her physicality left her with many emotional scars. In a candid chat with her co-star Jenna von Oÿ in herMayim Bialik’s Breakdownpodcast, she spoke of how the stereotype of being cast as the nerdy and quirky girl brought on a lot of judgement.

“I’m like the quirky friend, I’m like the weird one. The question is, who is that person’s friend on television? They didn’t know what to do with us, and people made horrible comments about my appearance — which have never left me, since I’ve been 14 years old.”
Despite facing undeserved criticism for her looks, Bialik persevered and never gave up on her dreams to make a mark in the entertainment industry. The icing on the cake that symbolized her determination was her role inThe Big Bang Theory.

One would think that being a successful child star over 5 seasons in a popular sitcom would be a very lucrative deal. But this was not the case for Mayim Bialik after her stint in the 90s showBlossom. The celebrity explained that while the pay scale for sitcoms in the 90s was not what it was today, a female child star headlining a show further reduced the economic factor.
As a result, Bialik, like most people, had to earn the money to put herself through college despite having done the Hollywood circuit at a young age. In her podcastMayim Bialik’s Breakdown,The Big Bang Theorystar recalled the various challenges she faced and the odd jobs she took on to make her college dream come true.

“I tutored, I did all the things that people do to make ends meet. I budgeted. We did not make the kind of money that set us up for the entire universe.”
Bialik went on to add that these experiences made her practical and humble, and did not allow her to take life for granted even at this stage when she is a bonafide superstar on television.
