Blizzard has released a newblog postto detail what changes will be made toOverwatch 2’s matchmaking and MMR system, updating the community on recent improvements that the development team intends to bring in 2023 to provide a fair competitive experience. In the first part of the blog post, the development team explained how matchmaking works and MMR is determined in the system, promising that players in different ranks won’t be matched in online modes anymore. Although Overwatch 2 has been trying to address some issues thanks to hero balance changes and bug fixes since its initial launch, players have been unhappy with the game’s uneven matchmaking system. In light of this, Blizzard has dissected competitive systems to tackle those issues starting with internal matchmaking rating (MMR).RELATED:Overwatch World Cup To Return In 2023 After Three Years OffThe goal of the matchmaker is to create as fair matches as possible in online play, and MMR is a part of this system. Each player has an MMR that describes their skill relative to everyone else. It has been revealed that MMR is not an absolute value, meaning it can change even if players' skills remain the same. Players' MMR will raise as they win games against players of their current MMR level. Blizzard also pointed out that the rank shown off in a player’s profile is not the same as their MMR.Having unraveled the MMR secret, the devs claimed that they are aware of unbalanced matches in group play, referencing the possibility of large skill disparity within a single role between two teams. “We’ve got changes coming to the game over the next few months which will dramatically reduce these disparities. We’ll try to find pairs of similarly rated players in each role when making a match. For support and damage roles, which have two slots, each player will be paired with one player on the opposite team. "

A better matchmaking system helps newcomers get used to different types of game modes and maps. Blizzard also shed some light on how MMR works for new players, saying that they start at an MMR value below average, and their ratings increase as they win matches against players in the same ranks. “We’re continuing to analyze data, tune values, and evaluate more changes to the matchmaker. Our highest hope is to make a match that feels fun for everyone, even the team that loses.”
