The words that he said threw everyone off guard, and fans would be thrilled to know his opinion for being compared with Hayao Miyazaki.

Your Name Director Makoto Shinkai Revolutionized the Romance Genre in Anime by Using the Most Common Trope Possible
Shinkai reflected in a 2016 interview, that Miyazaki has this tendency to speak in a paternally wise way, always teaching the new generation about the morals of his stories. However, Shinkai said his films relate deeply with his protagonists who are often young and deal with issues related to adolescence and discovery, just like any other normal kid.
I don’t know if that’s a generation thing or a personal thing, but I can’t tell teenagers what they should do, or how to live their lives. Because I remember those emotions I had when I was a teenager – I remember failure, I remember how great it was to talk with a girl I had a crush on – and I still have them. So our messages are very different.

Shinkai explains that he does not pretend to give a message to the teenagers on how to live, instead, he bases most of his stories on his own experiences and learnings during his youth. Such a unique perspective makes his story a more sympathetic and relatable experience for his audience. From these points, Shinkai established his voice to be heard in anime with differences from the iconic style of Miyazaki.
Shinkai’s Characters & Environments Are Filled With Realism & Relatability
Shinkai’s characters are often emotionally relatable. By mixing hyper-realism with all the old elements of traditional animation reminiscent of Studio Ghibli, he builds an immersive environment in his films which makes us feel that we are inside his world. From the subtle way of light to the careful placement of everyday objects, every background element becomes a nuanced tool for a narrative.
Shinkai’s character designs are also subtle with deep expressions through body language and the environmental ambiance. Some of his styles though are somewhat borrowed fromStudio Ghibli, in terms of flat faces and a heavy silhouette of dark lines. Still, his approach to character design is simple and not very overdone.

So, it seems like Shinkai doesn’t have to be the next Miyazaki, instead, we should now start searching for the next Shinkai!
