For years fans have wondered who exactly gave Whitebeard the massive scar on his chest. While some have theorized it to be Shanks or Roger, others are stuck on Figarland Shamrock, the older twin of Shanks. However, it might not be any of these characters.
Who gave Whitebeard his scar inOne Piece?
Before finding out who gave Whitebeard his scar, a detailed examination of when exactly he got it is necessary. Around 38 years before the current timeline, Whitebeard fought Roger at God Valley, and around 26 years ago, they clashed for three days and three nights. However, Whitebeard did not receive a scar from any of these incidents.
When Roger tells Whitebeard about the Will of D before he is executed, the anime shows Whitebeard’s scar, but in the manga, he covers his chest with a cup of sake, which isn’t big enough to cover the wound. However, when Whitebeard meets Shanks, he sports his scar and even tells Shanks that his face reminds him of the person who gave him the scar.
This explicitly means that it was someone who looked like Shanks and not Shanks himself who gave Whitebeard his scar. This leavesShamrock, Shanks’ twin brother, and Garling, their father, to be prime suspects. Or Roger, who Shanks apprenticed under. But since Whitebeard didn’t have a scar during the Pirate King’s execution, it can be chalked up to Shanks’ family.

Given that the pirate seems to have carried the scar for a long time, it is possible that the person who wounded him was Figarland Garling and not Shamrock since he would be too youngto fight Whitebeard in his prime.
Why would Garling scar Whitebeard?
Figarland Garling is one of the Gorosei working for the World Government. He is also a World Noble and thus serves as one of the main antagonists inOne Piece.The World Government is hell-bent on preventing the discovery of Laugh Tale Island and has thus taken several steps to make sure that pirates can’t reach it.
One of these steps could be the possession of the Road Poneglyoh from Fishman Island. The Poneglyph was found by the Roger Pirates at Fishman Island around 25 years prior to the current timeline; much later, Robin found it missing.
