Elden Ring’sfirst significant expansion,Shadow of the Erdtree, makes waves everywhere. From Streamers to fans, everyone talks about how the expansion has made the already challenging game even more difficult.

Not long ago, fans were putting on their tinfoil hats and were coming up with theories and predictions about the DLC. But now that it has been released, one such theory had some weight to it, which is an incredibly rare happening.
Elden Ring’s Butterfly Theory and How It Was Confirmed After Shadow of the Erdtree

Since the game follows the same pattern as previous titles by FromSoftware, it doesn’t serve everything on a silver platter to the player. Instead, it uses an incredibly subtle form of storytelling. A theory was proposed to decipher the game’s lore, which revolves around several butterflies found in the game.
The theory states that all of the butterflies that can be used as crafting items represent the children of Marika and Radagon. The theory was confirmed after the release of theElden RingDLC.

Understanding how deep the roots of the game’s lore go below the ground is fascinating. That was probably why Miyazaki-san stated that the DLC would be generous in providing context for characters we know less about in the base game.
Miyazaki-San Already Hinted How Substantial the Elden Ring DLC Will Be
Thanks to how it has been written, there is always more to explore regarding the game’s lore. Before the expansion came out, Hidetaka Miyazaki, thedirector of the game, was interviewed by CNET.

In the interview, he used Miquella’s example to highlight how the expansion will add to what we already know about characters in the game:
If you were to say Miquella’s story arc, perhaps those are the vertical strings of the weave. What I think comprise the horizontal strings of the weave are much of Malika’s past that we didn’t really get to experience in the base game,

After the Butterfly theory has been confirmed, the creative genius of Hidetaka Miyazaki can be appreciated even further. Because it genuinely takes an incredibly agile mind to come up with such deep and nuanced lore for a video game that is supposed to focus on gameplay.
