Within a span of about two years, rap legend Tupac Shakur was shot on two different occasions. While the first assassination attempt only left him seriously wounded, the next one ended up costing him his life, bringing one of the most iconic careers in hip-hop to a tragic end. Of course, the legacy he left behind is still alive in our hearts. After all, how does one forget someone like Tupac Shakur?

A year after the first attempt, he sat down in an interview where he got into heavy detail about the events of the night. While the 5 gunshot wounds and the brutality were obviously excruciatingly painful, what hurt him the most were the lies being spread about him in the media.
Tupac Shakur Recalled His First Assassination Attempt
When the lateTupac Shakurarrived at the Quad Recording Studios in Manhattan, little did he know that his life was going to change forever. He was with three people – his“homeboy”Stretch, Stretch’s friend Fred, and Tupac’s sister’s boyfriend, Zayd. (viaVibe).
The moment he walked into the lobby and was waiting to be buzzed in, something felt off. He saw two men in their thirties whom he assumed to be Biggie’s security guards. Tupac would later go on to believe that Biggie (and Sean “Diddy” Combs) was behind the assassination attempt.

At the studio, when Shakur and his friends were about to enter the elevator, they were jumped by two men holding two identical 9 mms. During the altercation, Shakur was shot a total of five times, including in his head.

While Shakur didn’t know the identities of those who shot him, he believed that the attackers knew him beforehand since they checked him for his gun. The two men didn’t hit anyone else except Shakur and it felt very personal to him.
When he finally made his way upstairs to the studio, intensely wounded, he was shocked to see 40 men in there, including Andre Harrell,Diddy, and Biggie.

What Really Hurt Tupac Shakur
In the interview with Vibe, Shakur recalled how none of those forty men approached him when he stood there fighting for his life, all bloody. In fact, even the ones who knew him wouldn’t look at him.

Harrell wouldn’t make eye contact even though the two of them had been going to dinner for the past few days together. Even Diddy (previously known as Puffy), who was supposedly on good terms with the late rapper, wouldn’t.
In his own words,

Nobody approached me. I noticed that nobody would look at me. Andre Harrell wouldn’t look at me. I had been going to dinner with him the last few days. He had invited me to the set of New York Undercover, telling me he was going to get me a job. Puffy was standing back too. I knew Puffy. He knew how much stuff I had done for Biggie before he came out.
When he was recovering, as he told Vibe, the one thing that truly hurt him was how the media was in one way or another blaming him for his own assassination attempt. As per them, Shakur had set it up. That’s when his hard exterior crumbled and he cried his heart out.

The No. 1 thing that bothered me was that dude that wrote that shit that said I pretended to do it. That I had set it up, it was an act. When I read that, I just started crying like a baby, like a b**ch. I could not believe it. It just tore me apart. And then the news was trying to say I had a gun and I had weed on me. Instead of saying I was a victim, they were making it like I did it.
Last fall, a suspect in Shakur’s murder was arrested – Duane “Keefe D” Davis. In an interview, Davis claimed that Diddy had solicited him to kill Shakur and Suge Knight. He stated (viaPEOPLE), that Diddy “needed to get rid of Knight and Shakur,”and that he offered Davis a million dollars for the job. Even Shakur himself believed that the rapper wasbehind it all.
In an interview withAllHipHop.comback in 2008, Diddy said that the accusations were nothing but a“story”that was“beyond ridiculous and completely false.”
As of now, the accused, Davis, has been denied bail and is scheduled to go to trial on November 04.
